Indiana Connections at the AMLE Virtual Conference

In addition to several Indiana schools attending the AMLE Virtual Conference this week, there are speakers and award winners from our state!
  • Dr. Nikki Woodson, Superintendent of MSD Washington Township, will accept the "National Educator of the Year" Award during the general session on Saturday at 9:45 am (with Gholdy Muhammad as speaker following). She will also be a judge for the Student Voice Off competition on Thursday night (which includes student Julia Polit from Bloomington.)
  • Tammy Miller and Mary Anne Knapp from Readable English will be speaking at 2:40 on Friday about "Literacy is Equity: It is not too Late for our Middle Level Students to Read at Grade Level."
  • Tara Mitchell and several students from Tri-West Middle School will present "Inclusive Youth Leadership: Student Perceptions and Implementation" at 3:40 pm on Friday. This relates to their successful experiences with Special Olympics and the Champions Together program. (See more about Champions later in this newsletter.)
  • Also at 3:40 on Friday, Dr. Matthew Moulton from ISU will co-present "Applications for Practice: 2021 Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards." On Saturday at 8 am, he will present "Writing for Publication."
  • Brad Weinstein and Nathan Maynard will be the featured speakers at the general session on Saturday afternoon at 3:15 pm on "Hacking School Discipline."
Individuals and schools can still register for the conference. Recordings of sessions will be available through December 17.

Did You See? The Indiana Teacher of the Year is a Middle School Teacher!

Congratulations to Sharita Ware, engineering & technology teacher at East Tipp Middle School in the Tippecanoe County School Corporation. From many worthy nominees, she was chosen as this year's TOY. I have read several accounts of her accomplishments, including the official IDOE announcement, and perhaps enjoyed this one from her hometown of Richmond the most.

Students (and Educators) Can Participate in #GratitudeSnaps

The dawn of November 1 means several people around the world will be participating in #GratudeSnaps !!! California librarian Katie McNamara created a @Wakelet you can use with students. Make a copy here. Adjust directions as needed. Her students will be making a

@WeVideo at the end. You might have your students use instagram or some other platform. They can share with their families at Thanksgiving.

High Priority ELA Standards for 6-8

Carrie Rosebrock from CIESC/Keep Indiana Learning (and a frequent presenter at our conferences and contributor to our newsletters) has taken time to sift through all the information and create these useful charts to summarize the "high priority" ELA standards from grades 6-8.

20th Anniversary "CELLebration"

The 20th anniversary event for CELL (Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning) at UIndy is this Wednesday. You can attend in person or virtually via youtube and hear from bestselling author Dan Heath (Upsteam, The Power of Moments, Switch, Made to Stick)

Heath's books are great examples of writings for the business world that have many applications to education as well.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF INDIANAPOLIS HOST COMMITTEE TO HONOR TEACHERS

Special DonorsChoose Grant up to $3000

The B1G Ten, Indy Sports Corp, and College Football Championship are teaming up to offer 10 DonorsChoose grants up to $3000 to K-8 teachers in 10 different schools in 10 different teaching areas. The deadline to apply is this Friday, November 5. The 10 winners will also be honored at the B1G Ten Championship Football game on December 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Find all of the details here.

More Champions Together News

IMLEA partners with Special Olympics Indiana to promote Unified Champions. While the pandemic has limited activities, the Rocket League with Unified eSports begins this week, and Super Smash Bros. will start in January. If you are interested, you can email Tori Batson at Special Olympics, and she can add you to their list. We are hoping that more events, including athletics will continue to be added. You can see many examples on our webpage. And as always, if you are interested in trainings or getting started, contact Tori.

Organizing Your Documents and Resources

Would you like to retire your membership in the "My Google Drive Is Such A Mess" Club? Join the Keep Indiana Learning Digital Learning Coaches @MelissaWalley & @talkintechccs for a quick session on November 16 for information to make that exit possible. How Understanding Middle School Friendships Can Help
Some great tips for exploring the confusing world of middle school friendships. These could be good points for discussion in an advisory group. More and more research is showing the importance of students having at least one good, reliable friend.
