Principal's Point
Hi North Families!
As you know the partnership between school and home is a key ingredient for student success. We hope that your students are feeling safe and supported each and every day. Here at North, we are busy with learning and activities. Our focus remains to cultivate a positive climate and create the best learning environment possible. We do this by practicing SHINE procedures and focusing on essential academic standards.
Everything that we do at North is designed to help students learn in all areas and be successful well beyond their time in elementary school.
Our students are settled in routines and understand our school-wide SHINE expectations. I encourage you to ask your student what SHINE means to them. The teachers have worked hard to create meaningful learning opportunities as well as teach school-wide procedure expectations.
We’re fortunate to work with your students every day. Thank you for allowing us to play a role in their development
Sincerely,
Mr. Lugo
Principal

Top 10 Homework Tips
Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework. It shows kids that what they do is important. Parents can be supportive by demonstrating study and organization skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break. Here are some tips to guide the way:
1. Know the teachers — and what they're looking for. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.
2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies — paper, pencils, glue, scissors — within reach.
3. Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner.
4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child to break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible.
5. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls.
6. Make sure kids do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions, but it's a kid's job to do the learning.
7. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns.
8. Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice.
9. Praise their work and efforts. Post their work or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives.
10. If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk about it with your child's teacher. Some kids have trouble seeing the board and may need glasses; others might need a little extra help.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. As kids grow, plan on routine dental checkups anywhere from once every 3 months to once a year, depending on the dentist’s recommendations. Limiting intake of sugary foods and drinks along with brushing and flossing all contribute to a child’s dental health. Your partnership with the dentist will help ensure healthy teeth and a beautiful smile!
Panorama Student Survey
Noblesville Schools is committed to providing a great school experience for all students. To help achieve this we will use a platform called Panorama to survey students in grades 3-5 during the dates of February 28 - March 11, 2022. The Panorama survey seeks to gather input on topics like school climate and culture, emotion regulation, self-management, social awareness and belonging. When students feel connected to their school environment, they are more engaged and increasingly successful in both academic and social achievements. More information on the survey can be found here.
Although the survey is not mandatory, student perceptions will provide valuable insights for future planning, support and programming. Results will be used to determine needs based on trends for our school.
If you wish for your student to opt-out, you can submit an opt-out form. The survey is voluntary and students are welcome to choose an alternate activity (read, homework, etc.) at the time the survey is given.
If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact our district counseling coordinator, Dana Nelson at (317) 773- 3171 or dana_nelson@nobl.k12.in.us
Thank you for your support of this important opportunity to best serve students and our school community.
