Teacher Appreciation
February 2024
Hello Friends,
While the weather may be chilly outside, the world of education is buzzing with activity. Enter the season of state testing and hiring. I’d like to share two strategies with you: one to add some excitement to state testing and another to help you better understand what your teachers want. Let’s begin with the fun idea, which I discuss in my book, School Transformation Through Teacher Appreciation,” called Step Contest.
During the state assessment, teachers are required to actively monitor students. Why not make it an enjoyable experience? Equip interested teachers with pedometers and organize a friendly competition based on the number of steps taken while actively monitoring. You can introduce a daily challenge and offer prizes such jean passes, sweats passes, or, if your budget allows, gift certificate for classroom or teacher supplies. (You can learn more about school budget gift certificates in my December 2022 Newsletter here.) Additionally, I recommend collaborating with a local insurance company to provide pedometers featuring their logo.
Now, let’s move on to the second strategy. I understand that you’re currently overwhelmed, however it is crucial to find time to communicate with your teachers, especially those you wish to retain and those who may be considering leaving your school for another school/district. Schedule meetings with them and ask a few important questions:
- Looking ahead to next year, what is one aspect of our school you believe we should ensure remains unchanged?
- Looking ahead to next year, what is one area we should consider changing or improving?
- What suggestions do you have regarding professional development sessions in August?
These conversations will provide valuable insights and help you create a supportive and engaging environment for your teachers.
