Human Growth & Development & HIV/AIDS Presentations in Grades 4 and 5
As part of the Boyertown Area School District health curriculum, children in grades 4 and 5 are given the opportunity to receive instruction in human growth & development and HIV/AIDS education. The grade four curriculum provides instruction specifically about the immune system and HIV/AIDS while the focus in 5th grade is on human growth and development. The following presentations provide opportunities for children to gain an understanding in fourth grade about how the immune system works and an overview of HIV/AIDS virus. In fifth grade the focus is on the biological changes that occur while growing up:
4th Grade Videos: The Immune System Doing Its Part
5th Grade Videos: Always Changing for Boys and Always Changing for Girls
You may have your child excused from the program with a written request. Requests will be honored in accordance with state requirements. Please send written requests to the Physical Education teacher at your son/daughter's school.
Parent Preview Night
Parents of children in grades 4 and 5 are invited to view the human growth and development education and HIV/AIDS programs during our Parent Wellness Night. Parents will have the opportunity to preview videos that will be used for the student presentations and ask questions after the video presentations. The parent preview information is as follows:
When: Thursday, January 25, 2024
Where: BASH Library
Times: Grade 4 Parents 6:00 PM, Grade 5 Parents 6:45 PM
*Please Note: If you are unable to attend the parent preview night, the presentation and videos will be available online. You may view the presentation and videos at any time on the district website. The dates of the presentations at each school will be shared on January 25th. The Presentation can be found on the BASD website under parents/community and then in the parent resources section.
It is the District’s belief that this important activity should be a shared responsibility between home and school. You may wish to expand upon the knowledge you have given your son or daughter, or possibly use the school’s presentation, as a basis for follow-up discussion.
We encourage your presence to view the components of our program. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Lucie Bergeyova at lbergeyova@boyertownasd.org

Title I Programs in the Boyertown Area School District:
Boyertown, Colebrookdale, Earl and Washington are the identified Title I elementary schools in our district. Middle School West is also identified as a Title I school. These schools receive Title I funding based on the percentage of low-income eligible students.
Title I is a federally funded program purposed with ensuring all children have a fair and equal opportunity to learn and grow. Beginning in the 2023-24, Boyertown has transitioned to a Schoolwide Title I program. A Schoolwide program is designed to serve all students in a Title I building and improve all structures to help support student learning. Our Schoolwide plan was developed with the help of parents, community members, teachers, and administrators. Our plan is evaluated annually to determine the impact that these supports have on student achievement.
As a Schoolwide Title I building, the staff is reviewing all students' data to determine needs. Students are identified for intervention if in need of academic support, primarily in the area of reading. All students receiving additional support must qualify through our district assessments.
Support is provided to the students individually or in small groups both in class and as a pullout program. Schools set a goal for academic progress that will be measured through mid-year and end-of-the-year assessments. The Reading Specialists, Intervention teachers, paraprofessionals, and classroom teachers partner together to support all Title I students.
As a Title I Schoolwide building, all students are considered Title I students and all teachers are considered Title I teachers. All of our professionals are highly qualified teachers. They hold a Bachelor's Degree or higher, Pennsylvania certification, and have shown competency in their subject area. In addition, the paraprofessionals in the program are also highly qualified. They have either an Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree, a minimum of two years of college, or have passed a rigorous local assessment.
Our district works diligently to use the Title I funds as required and to provide these additional services to enhance the educational program of our Title I students. If you have any questions about the Title I program, please reach out to your building's reading specialist or call the Title I office at (610) 369-7414.

PARENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES
As a reminder, car riders are dropped off and picked up at the back of the building. During these times, adults should not be getting out of their cars. There are staff members available if your child needs assistance getting in and/or out of the car. We appreciate your help in keeping Earl students safe.
FID DAYS
FID (Flexible Instruction Days)
BASD has the ability to utilize one snow day and 5 flexible instruction days throughout the school year in the event that inclement weather or other emergency school closing. Your child’s teacher will review these directions with your child early next week. In the event of an unexpected school closing, the district message will define what type of day is being used. Digital and paper/pencil options will be provided. If a student cannot access the Internet or paper copies of the learning activities, he/she will have three (3) school days to complete the assignments. Any student who fails to complete their FID assignment within three school days will be marked as absent.
LUNCH SNACKS GRADES 3-5
We will be offering doubles and snacks to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students after Labor Day. A double lunch costs $2.70 and that includes only the entrée. For example, “Johnny can only purchase a snack on Friday” or “Johnny can purchase a snack on Tuesday and Thursday, etc. We can not answer a student if they ask whether or not they got a snack this week 😊
