Greetings, Blue Jay Families!

On behalf of all of our incredible staff here at Centennial, I would like to wish all of our families a Happy New Year! We hope the break was both fun and restful for all of you.

We are looking forward to an exciting second half of the year! Returning from winter break gives us a chance to reset expectations and routines at school. We will be reviewing our expectations for appropriate behaviors for all areas of the building, including classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and playground: Be Safe, Respectful, Responsible and Kind – that's the Blue Jay Way!

After all the excitement of the holidays, it's also a good time to reset and rebuild your routines at home, with regular bedtimes and morning routines so kids can come to school refreshed and ready to learn. As we begin district assessments in reading and math starting this week, it will be especially important for students to get a good night's rest and a good breakfast so they arrive at school on time and ready to shine.

Please remind your kiddos that we don't expect students to know everything – that's what we're here for! These assessments are designed to give us the information we need to help students move forward in their learning, so the important thing is that they just do their best.

As always, please let us know how we can help make school a positive experience for your kiddos!

Don Hakala, Principal

January Focus: Positive Self-Talk January Focus: Positive Self-Talk

positive self-talk

Families, positive self-talk can help students build self-esteem and confidence, encouraging them to look at the bright side, to keep trying and to overcome challenges. When children learn to use positive words rather than putting themselves down, they may be more likely to keep trying even when things don’t work out the way they planned or hoped.

Be sure to let your kids in on your own positive self-talk. When you're faced with a difficult task, talk through it in front of your kids. You can say things like, "I know this is going to be hard, but if I stick with it, I know I can do it." Let them see you fail at something, and keep trying anyway. Show them that you can laugh at yourself. Remind them that it's okay to make mistakes, and in fact, that's how we learn!

Tips for Getting to School on Time Tips for Getting to School on Time

Our families have been doing a great job this year calling to let us know if their student will be out for the day. We also want to remind everyone of the importance of being on time. Being on time is an important life-long skill to develop. Being even a few minutes late can be embarrassing to a kiddo, as well as disruptive to the class. Some classes have morning meetings, for example, to set the tone for the day. Students who are chronically late may be missing out on important instruction or information.

Here are some tips for getting out the door on time:

1. Figure out a morning routine and stick to it.

2. Do as much the night before as possible. Whether it's packing up backpacks, making lunches, or laying out clothes.

3. Get the nighttime routine down, too, to make sure kids are getting enough sleep.

Still chronically late despite all of your efforts? Try to figure out the underlying reason. Is your student trying to avoid something, or someone, at school? Remember, you can always work with your child's teacher to solve these kinds of problems.

Thank you for caring!

Our Amazing PTO Our Amazing PTO

Centennial has an outstanding PTO! We really appreciate all they do to support our staff and students at CES! We would love to have you participate with this group. Meetings are generally held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Child care is always available, and they offer a light meal. You can visit their new website at www.cespto.org.

How to support our school:

  • You can always get blue bags from the school office. This is an easy way to support the PTO through donations of bottles and cans. Just bring the bag to the Springfield Bottle Drop Redemption Center, scan the PTO bar code, and toss your bag.
  • Watch for upcoming fundraisers, and in the meantime, volunteer!
