Week of October 18th
Message from Principal Drew...
What a great spirit week we just completed! Students and staff it was amazing to see your creativity and school spirit on full display. From themed days to our pep rally to a wonderful culminating homecoming game and the crowning of our King and Queen. Congratulations to our 2021 Homecoming King, Ty Nixon, and our 2021 Homecoming Queen Lindsey Ferguson. Students I challenge each of you to carry that same school spirit into the rest of the school year. Our band placed first in almost every category including best overall at their competition on Saturday, our athletic teams all posted victories, and benchmark testing was completed as we closed out the first nine weeks grading period.
We have a very busy week this week at PCHS.
Monday is a teacher workday. Students do not report to school on Monday. Our soccer team will play an away game at Tarboro starting at 6:00 PM.
Tuesday is the first day of the 2nd nine weeks. Every student should take advantage of this new beginning by completing work and staying on top of their assignments from the very beginning. Volleyball has an away match at Bertie starting at 4:30.
Wednesday all 10th grade students will take the Pre-ACT test. This test is a great opportunity for our tenth grade students to prepare for the ACT as well as receive feedback and support to make them more successful in all educational pursuits. Tenth grade students take your time and do your best on this assessment. We also have a home soccer match versus Manteo starting at 5:00 and our Volleyball team plays away at Camden at 4:30.
Thursday PCHS will participate in the Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill. This is a statewide drill to help all schools prepare for the immediate and long range safety needs in the event of an earthquake. Cross Country will run their conference championship meet at Gates County starting at 4:30.
Friday night we will host Gates County in football at 7:00 PM.
On Saturday of this week our volleyball team will host the first round of the state playoffs. The opponent and time of the game are to be determined.
Earlier in this message I mentioned new beginnings. Students this Tuesday is just that for your. New beginnings are golden opportunities for positive change and improvement. None of us can change the outcomes from the first nine weeks. However, starting on Tuesday we can all determine the path for success moving forward. Students you have the chance to take control of your grades and your success starting now. If you were not as successful as you would have like to have been during the first nine weeks then Tuesday is where you start over, refocus, and improve through consistent daily effort and completion of your work. I encourage you to have conversations with your teachers about what you can do to reach your potential and be successful in the final grading period for the first semester. We know you can do this and we are here to help you in any way we can. Getting started on the right path makes it much easier to stay there.

PreACT...
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has a partnership with ACT, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational assessment, research, information, and program management services. In North Carolina, all tenth-graders take the PreACT. This assessment measures what students have learned in their courses and helps educators identify the information that students still need to learn to succeed in college or a career.
The PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience by providing students early exposure to ACT test-quality questions. The PreACT is reported on the same 1–36 score scale as the ACT, but PreACT has a maximum score of 35. The PreACT also provides a predicted ACT composite score range.
The PreACT assessment includes four multiple-choice tests: English, math, reading, and science. The PreACT is designed to help parents and educators identify areas where students may need additional academic support or remediation. The PreACT can also help to initiate strategic conversations between parents and schools regarding dual enrollment decisions, identifying curriculum gaps, implementing interventions on behalf of students, and choosing Advanced Placement classes.
Tenth-grade students will be testing on October 20th.

STOMP Out Bullying™
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. This week is Week of Inclusion and we encourage you to do the following...
- Don't let anyone at school eat alone in the cafeteria or on a school field trip. Make it the week of #NOONEEATSALONE
- Include other students in school activities
- Include other students in after school activities
- Invite someone you don't know that well to sit next to you on the bus. Learn about each other.
- At one point or another each of us has felt insecure, or stressed out, or alone. It is important to remind our friends and classmates that we are all in it together and we are there to listen and support each other. Use the hashtag #HereForYou on social media to let your classmates know that they have your support and a person to reach out to if they ever need to talk.
- October 20 is #UnityDay--Wear Orange to Prevent Bullying and Promote Kindness.
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test will be given at PCHS on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at 8:30. This test is important if you are interested in joining any branch of the military; HOWEVER, you can also take this test if you would like to find out what careers are best suited for your strengths. Please review the following websites for more information:
If you would like to register to take this free test, please stop the counseling office and see Mrs. Thomas or send her an email. You must register to take the test.
