Edgewood's Tiger Talk
January 19, 2024
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
Reading Fluency
It's really important for kids to read out loud as they're learning to read. Children should read out loud at least until they're reading ~a 3rd grade level.
Partner Reading
This shares the joy of reading and gives kids an opportunity to practice reading fluency.
Ukuleles!!!
Mrs. Dropp has brought this amazing opportunity for our 3rd-5th graders. Thank you to the Greenfield Education Foundation for giving us a grant to purchase the instruments!
Principal's Update
Recently, I had a potential future parent meet with me to ask questions about learning at Edgewood. She was concerned that her 5 year old came home with easy homework from his current school. On the one hand, I appreciate her belief and knowledge that her child can do more complex things. On the other, homework and worksheets aren't the kind of learning that young children need. For young children, time at home is better spent learning things like:
1) How to do things independently (like making sandwiches, helping with food prep, caring for pets)
2) How to win and lose well (this is a big life skill!)
3) How to be creative--making things with paper, blocks, etc.
And the best thing you can do at home to support your child's academic learning is to read to them. I came across this quote recently:
"No player in the NBA was born wanting to play basketball. The desire to play ball or to read must be planted. The last 25 years of research show that reading aloud to a child is the oldest, cheapest and most successful method of instilling that desire. Shooting baskets with a child creates a basketball player; reading to a child creates a reader." ~ Jim Trelease
If you're looking for things to do at home to support your child's growth at school, consider the above. Children are capable of doing and understanding a lot, and part of growing up is giving them opportunities to practice.
Ps. Looking for a book to read to your children? My kids and I are loving The Puppets of Spellhorst by Kate DiCamillo. They also loved Witches by Roald Dahl (though this one creeped me out as a kid).
Bingo
Trouble
A great game for dealing with disappointment in a sportsman-like way, counting, and having fun.
Uno
A bit of strategy, a bit of luck--it's good for laughs, practicing dealing with disappointment, and let's be honest-- it always feels a bit good to throw down a "Wild--Draw 4".
