Elm Road Express June 2021
"Putting Dreams into Flight"
From the Desk of Dr. Soto Kile
Summer is around the corner! Our students and staff members have worked so hard this year. We have persevered through virtual and in-person instruction, and the students were champs through all the added safety measures. I appreciate all who assisted in this effort and families for your flexibility through the altered schedules. Thank you, to the PTO Board for the student fun packets, as well as the gracious send-off during the last PTO meeting.
Although our end of the year didn’t seem exactly the same as previous years, the virtual award ceremonies, virtual camp experience for 5th grade students, and our upcoming Fun in the Sun Day make me feel as though we are on our way to an exciting return. Next school year, our 7:40 a.m. arrival time will resume, as will many of our common practices.
I would like to thank the Elm Road community for the 11 wonderful years of working with your families. I will cherish my years as principal at Elm Road. Mrs. Beers will continue with our learning mission and bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to Elm. I look forward to working with her to continue Elm’s rich tradition of excellence. Although I won’t be at Elm everyday, I look forward to working with all of our schools next school year. Elm Road will always hold a very special place in my heart. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!
Welcome Mrs. Beers
Elm Road Families,
I am so excited for the opportunity to return to Elm Road for the 21-22 school year as the principal! This past year I served as the Assistant to the Principal at Meadow’s Edge. I immediately felt that Elm Road was a special place when I joined the staff in 2019 as the Assistant to the Principal. I am so thankful for my time at Elm Road where I got a chance to know staff, students and families. Elm Road has incredible families and students, along with an amazing staff. I have had the opportunity to meet most of the students at Elm Road, and I look forward to meeting more families and students this fall! I hope you all have a safe and relaxing summer break and I look forward to seeing students back in August!

Saying Good Bye to Staff Members
Miss Stevenson
Mrs. Huang
I have bittersweet news to share with you. I will retire at the end of this school year. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family. I have taught ENL at PHM schools for 25 years. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to serve culturally diverse students. I appreciate having been a part of the Elm Road family for the last seven years. I have many wonderful memories with staff, students, and families that I will cherish for many years to come. It has been rewarding to see students grow academically, socially and emotionally. I am confident that the students will continue to soar with the caring and dedicated staff at Elm Road. I will truly miss you all! I hope all Elm Road Eagles have a safe and fun summer vacation! Best wishes to everyone!

I have enjoyed my past ten years here at Elm. It was not an easy decision to make, but I am very excited to begin my new adventure as an ENL teacher. I have loved seeing your children learn and grow throughout the years. I will always cherish the memories I have made while teaching at Elm.
Mrs. Myers
Thank you to all of the students, parents, and colleagues that have made my 16 years at Elm so wonderful. I've been beyond lucky to get to teach (and learn!) here with all of you. While I am wildly excited about heading to Discovery to teach 6th grade social studies, I am also keenly aware that there is no place like Elm. I will take all of the memories and love I have experienced here with me and hope that our paths cross again. Keep soaring, Eagles!

It has brought me so much joy to be a part of the Elm Road family this year! After working for Kid's Club here in 2019, I knew Elm Road would be the perfect place to begin my teaching career. The staff, students, and families are truly some of the greatest! I am grateful for all that I have learned from each of you and the wonderful experience you provided me. I don't know where I will go next, but I am continuing on my journey a better person and educator because of the Elm Road Community. Thank you!

Library Lines
May was a fun month in the library. All of our Pre-K through 2nd graders participated in the Young Athletes Program sponsored by the Special Olympics. It is an inclusive program using songs, games, and a read aloud book brought to us by Professional Performer Craig Tornquist. The students have loved everything about the program. We are fortunate to get to pilot this program.
All grade levels participated in the Screen Free Week at the beginning of the month. Successful students received a choice of a free book for their own personal library! They commented on how they enjoyed being off screens and the fun they discovered spending time off screens. Thank you for supporting the Screen Free Week.
Be sure to join the FREE summer reading program offered by the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library. The theme is “Tails and Tales” - The Summer Reading Program is from June 1 to July 31. Please help your child set some reading goals and visit the Public Library often!
Remember to READ, READ, READ! – Mrs. Linda Knapp
STEM
In May, we continued using the VR headsets and Code on the Floor in most grades. Our 3rd graders learned a lot about the problem of plastic use throughout the world and how some people have solved the pollution problem. They made pretty flowers out of a plastic bag, (see photo)
We finished out the year doing some of our favorite STEM activities using Coding, Keva Planks, Legos, Sphero Minis, Ozobots, etc. Please continue doing STEM projects over the summer. Stay curious, make mistakes to learn from them, and be creative.
What's Happening in Gym
We wrapped up another fantastic year of fitness in the gym with end of the year testing, relays, kickball and parachute. We also practiced some throwing and catching by playing “Fire and Ice” tag, “Protect the Castle” and “Matball”.
Thank you for all the donations for our “Fun in the Sun” day! We hope your child enjoyed the activities on the last day of school.
Kindergarten through second grade parents, please review the end of the year assessments that went home with your child. Any additional practice would benefit your child over the summer months!
Good luck to our fifth graders as they transition into middle school! You will be missed!
Enjoy the summer months with your family!

Happy Summer, Eagles!
As I write this last newsletter message for the 2020-2021 school year, I must say that this has been a year of both challenge and growth. Working together with teachers and staff, students and their families successfully engaged in new ways to meet the needs of our young learners. As a school community, we persevered and found unique ways to achieve success in a year full of unprecedented obstacles. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support of our literacy program and I look forward to another successful year here at Elm Road next fall!
Please take time to review a new Smore newsletter, The Reading Connection, which focuses on literacy development for Title I families. The button is linked below this message.
