"This month, students are reading “Channel of Peace: Stranded in Gander on 9/11”. In this book, Kevin Tuerff describes how touched he was by the kindness strangers showed him and the 6,000 other stranded passengers who couldn’t fly into the US on September 11, 2001. He began the Pay It Forward 9/11 movement the next year as a way to both honor those who lost their lives and to celebrate the good in the world."

In sum, the VIDEO offers an inside glimpse into significant, costly challenges in the CHS building that are not visible to the eye when walking the building as a visitor. Many of the facility challenges facing the District lie within the tunnels under the building. To complicate matters, some issues are occurring under concrete flooring and other areas that are not easily accessible for repairs.

"Thank you THOMAS for giving our first BOOK CHAT this year. You got a lot of readers excited about The Kingdom of Fantasy by Geronimo Stilton!

Book chats are an opportunity for kids - who absolutely loved a book - to share about it with the whole class:

• Tell a little bit about the book (without spoiling the best parts)
• Explain why they loved it
• Read a short passage that was especially meaningful to them

Book Chat gets other kids excited about the book and models a love of reading. After a child or I book chat about a certain book, it flies off the shelf. I usually end up purchasing more copies of the book just to satisfy their desire.

MYSTERY READER with Kindergarten Students...who could it be???

(Friday September 6)

"Every Friday I have a Mystery Reader come and read 1 or 2 books to our class. It is always a pleasure when I can snag SUPERINTENDENT MICHAEL HANLON to be our first Reader for the year. He read "Try a Little Kindness: A Guide to Being Better" by Henry Cole.

Dr. Hanlon, Dr. Moran and Dr. Klein have all been visitors in my class! The Mystery Reader program gives the students' parents a chance to sign up during open house for the Friday that works best for them. I encourage parents to read to the class for 20 minutes and then join the class at lunch. This open classroom and cafeteria policy gives parents a chance to explore their child’s world. It also allows parents a chance to see their child in a working school setting."

Q: What is the FUN BUS?

A: Let the library come to you. Can’t get to a library? No problem.

• The library is alive and active throughout Geauga County, wherever patrons happen to be.
• The Geauga County Public library's mobile program includes two Bookmobiles (one of which is the “Fun Bus”) and a Lobby Stop Vehicle

• The mobile library often makes “celebrity” appearances at festivals, schools, day care centers, Amish farms, and other community centers.

• Fun Bus helps people check out materials so that they don’t need to travel to a building.

COOL FACT: Mobile Services checks out over 300,000 items annually.

That’s a lot of reading!

MR. EDWARD MULLALY

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education
• Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction

When did you know you wanted to be a teacher?

• I took a career planning course in college, and all the tests came back with educator as my number one career.

Currently Teaching: Grade 2 at Park Elementary

Total Number of Years Teaching: 24

I was a substitute for two years. Then I taught Title I for three years and finally landed a job in Chardon teaching 1st grade then 2nd grade the following year until now. I have been teaching in Chardon for 19 years.

One of Mr. Mullaly's greatest hopes/goals for his students:

For them to love to learn and be the best they can be. I hope they enjoy coming to school and have fun learning new things.

Hobbies:

I enjoy golf, tennis, and ping pong when I am not grading papers.

Favorite Children's Book:

Any book by Bill Peet, but I especially love "No Such Things".

I do not have to start work until 6:30am!

• I have met some absolutely wonderful people in Chardon!

Favorite Books:

I love the Bible and inspirational books or anything with a dragon!

Hobbies:

• I love to hike
• Being outside hearing birds
• Learning about flowers
• Drinking tea
• Playing baseball
• and yes - Powerwashing!

FAQ: What is the difference between a bond issue and an operating levy?

• By law, funding for school buildings and other capital improvements is separate from funds used for general operating expenses. A property tax-based bond issue is the most common way to pay for building projects.

• An operating levy is also a property tax, but can only be used to pay for day-to-day operations of schools, including educational resources, utilities, salaries, benefits, etc. Thus, none of the funds generated by the May 2018 operating levy can be used to build new buildings.

Voter registration must be completed by October 7 in order to be eligible to vote in the November 5 General Election.

Early voting begins October 8.

Interact Club, Actively Caring for People, and National Honor Society:

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Rob Mizen and Mr. Doug Higham, among others, donated their time to coordinate an effort for three CHS groups to tackle the overgrown courtyard. Students from Interact Club, Actively Caring 4 People, and National Honor Society joined forces on their day off from school and rejuvenated the courtyard by pulling out weeds, clearing dead branches, digging and more.

THANK YOU to all of these service minded students (& staff members!) for providing the courtyard with its needed TLC!

Hilltopper Marching Band, including Topperettes and Majorettes, took Stewart Field on Saturday September 14 as only one of nine marching bands that performed at Solon's 13th Annual Show: Band Together. The District is incredibly proud of these talented students!

Congratulations Chardon Hilltoppers for scoring 35 points in the football game against Alliance on 9/13 before lightning forced the teams to end the game. Game was not a forfeit -- official final score was Chardon 35 and Alliance 0.

1) Pay School Fees - Instructions

2) Annual Update - The window to complete the Annual Update will be open between August 1, 2019 and September 30, 2019. Each student must have an Annual Update completed online each year. After logging in to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, on the bottom left toolbar, click "More" then select "Online Registration" to complete the annual update for each student. This update must be completed EACH school year for ALL students - returning students and recently registered new students. Questions? Call the Board of Education office at 440-285-4052.
