Katie Kim was awarded 2nd place in the American Protégé International Woodwinds and Brass Competition 2023 in the junior category. This was her first competition. American Protégé Music Competition is an extremely competitive international competition, with a record number of applicants this year from more than 70 countries. As a result of her 2nd place recognition, Katie will be performing in a recital at Carnegie Hall, New York on May 12, 2024.

Katie shared that she struggled with the intense preparation process for this competition and wanted to quit at times, but is glad that she persevered. "I am very excited and it is an honor to get an award and perform at Carnegie Hall" says Katie.

Katie is in 7th grade at Brea Junior High and plays flute in the Concert Band.

Four BJH students auditioned last month for the California All-State Honor Bands and Orchestras. These prestigious honor groups take place annually, and hundreds of students from all over the state apply. Even to prepare for this audition is a great accomplishment, as it is extremely competitive and standards are high. The audition process alone is a great experience for our students.

Kiera O'Connell, 8th grade, clarinet

Alice Yang, 7th grade, cello

David Lee was accepted into the All-State Concert Band and will be performing with the group at the California All State Music Educators Conference in Sacramento in February, 2024. Congratulations to David!
