What's Up @ West
Oregon Trail: Go or Stay?
Students in Mr. Murphy's eighth grade social studies classes set out on the Oregon Trail during the unit on U.S. Western Expansion. The Oregon Trail interactive activity gave them a glimpse of what life was like on the actual trail. Following the arduous journey, the pioneers discussed the challenges, obstacles and hardships that they faced. The lesson culminated with a DBQ (Document Based Question) assignment that asked "In the 1850s, would I have migrated to the "far west" or stayed home?"
Pictionary
The use of symbolism can transform student art. Understanding and being able to use symbolic imagery and visual metaphors empowers students’ voices and creative depths.
After exploring the concept of symbolism through the interpretation of common symbols, students in Miss DiCicco's eighth grade art classes put this knowledge to use in a spirited Pictionary competition. The lesson will be incorporated into their upcoming surreal self portrait project.
Perkiomen Watershed Stream Clean-up
PVMS West students and their families joined seventh grade science teacher and Green Team advisor, Danielle Emers in an important community service event this past weekend. The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy hosted its annual Stream Clean-up on Saturday, April 15th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Ms. Emers would like to extend her sincere thanks to Dan, Angela, Emma, Jackson, Lilly, Void, and the Ellison family for their efforts. Together they collected 17 bags of trash, plus scrap metal and other garbage from the Perkiomen Creek! She encourages us all to contribute to the efforts to keep our watershed clean by disposing of waste properly and never littering! Next year will be the Watershed's 25th annual clean up! Consider donating your time next May!

Take Your Child To Work Day

Facility Dog @ West Feedback
PV West is exploring the possibility of obtaining a facility (therapy) dog. There are quite a few steps that need to occur prior to introducing or purchasing a facility dog at West. We would like to hear your feedback as we consider these steps. Facility dogs are known for their ability to provide emotional support to students and staff and are anticipated to be a healthy addition to PV West.
In advance of this message, PV has conducted quite a bit of research into these dogs over the past 2 years, and there are currently several school districts who have successfully implemented a Facility Dog program. What have they found? Their dog has helped to calm students who are anxious, crying and overwhelmed with stress, and their dog has substantially increased the overall morale in the building.
To learn more about Facility Dogs in schools, feel free to check out the following article: https://www.nassp.org/2021/03/16/therapy-dog-programs-improving-student-and-staff-well-being/
Also, check out the Facility Dog program at East Penn School District: https://eastpenntherapydogs.weebly.com/
Please complete this brief 2-3 minute survey so we can ascertain parental support for this initiative. Thank You!

Student Responsibility & Care of Chromebooks
Perkiomen Valley School District strives to create an environment where every learner has the power to meet the challenges of today’s world with confidence. Chromebooks support this environment in many ways. These devices break down classroom walls and provide both educators and students with the ability to access more educational resources than ever before. Chromebooks encourage collaboration and allow learning opportunities to be anywhere at any time. This tool will permit teachers to utilize mobile and social technologies in their everyday instruction, encouraging a habit of lifelong learning in their students, and continue to meet the ever-changing challenges of college and career readiness.
- Students are responsible for the general care of their issued Chromebook.
- Students must report Chromebooks that are damaged, lost, stolen, or fail to work properly.
- Report any issues to the Chromebook Service Center in your building’s library as soon as possible, and inform your teachers.
- Students are responsible for bringing completely charged Chromebooks to school each day.
ALL REPAIRS MUST BE HANDLED BY THE PERKIOMEN VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT.

Parents of 6th grade students, please know that you are required to submit a physical form for your child during this school year. In addition, if your child receives any immunizations, please submit those as well. Prior to the start of 7th grade, your child will need to receive the Tdap and Meningitis vaccinations, so now is a good time to get those immunizations!
Parents of 7th grade students are required to submit a dental form for your child.
The school physician and the school dentist will be at Middle School West in the Spring of 2023, and your child will be seen by them if the proper form is not handed in prior.
Tween Talk Group
Tweens, ages 11 to 13, are invited to chat in a fun, informal atmosphere with Erin McMonagle, a guidance counselor at Perkiomen Valley East Middle School - as part of our Julia’s Joy Youth Empowerment Program. We have created a safe group, where they can come relax, unload and learn they are not alone all while meeting new friends. We believe learning Stress Management tips will help youth deal with the pressures they are feeling at this age and into the future!
This group is free thanks to donations, if you would like to make a donation, it is always appreciated, but not necessary!
Learn more about our workshops and our mission at http://www.JuliasJoy.org
Be Part of the Conversation - Upcoming Programs
We are a collaboration of community leaders, clinicians, students, school district representatives, and families who believe that having meaningful, inclusive conversations about substance use and addiction will support individuals and their families in their efforts to develop healthy coping skills and access support whenever there is a need. Learn more about us. See the link below for a number of programs that Be a Part of the Conversation offers.
