A Message from the Superintendent
When President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, Title VI of that law set in motion prohibition of discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Followed shortly thereafter by two additional laws to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex (Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972) and disability (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973), education was forever changed for the better.
Nationally, the percentage of Black or African American students graduating from high school increased from 25.7% in 1964 to 90.3% in 2021, according to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Also, in 1964, only 306, 000 Black or African American students attended college. Today, close to 3 million attend college annually.
As the nation observes Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service tomorrow, it's important our children understand the civil rights leader’s impact on everything from voting rights and volunteerism to educational and economic progress for all Americans.
Events memorializing Dr. King and his legacy are taking place throughout Riverside County. In the City of Riverside, the 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk-A-Thon will take place tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The walkathon will depart from the Stratton Community Center in Bordwell Park, 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd. The event, which will include speakers and performers, is organized by the Riverside African American Historical Society.

We are in the process are studying our current boundaries to balance capacity utilization among our schools. In other words, when schools are either too full or too empty, the Board of Education may adjust one or more boundaries to balance enrollment, depending on the circumstances.

Alvord provides an extension of the school day and school year through its Expanded Learning Program. The focus is on academic, artistic, social, emotional, and physical development for students in elementary and middle school, including middle school sports. The program does not replicate learning activities that take place during the regular school day. Instead, it builds upon them. The program is offered everyday after school, as well as intercession, including summer and extended breaks for holidays. Learn more about it here. Or call (951) 358-1682, Monday - Friday, 9:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Participate in our Middle School Sports Program
Did you know we offer a full year of middle school sports? We kick off the program with Track and Field just a few days after the school year begins. Specific information regarding clinic and team tryouts will be distributed by each individual middle school site. The link to register to participate in any our middle school sports programs will be sent via Parent Square next week once our registration website goes live. All interested students will need to register and students trying out for any of our competitive teams will need to provide a sports clearance physical form completed by a medical doctor prior to their tryout. Forms can be obtained in the main office of any of our middle schools. Soccer follows the Track & Field season. Other sports include volleyball, flag-football, basketball and pep squad. Make sure your child is registered to participate. The website link is coming soon!
