A Message from the Administrator
Greetings MCS Families,
Given the circumstances, we have had a great start to the new year, and students have genuinely seemed excited to return. As we move to the end of the first semester, please consider that this is a school year like none we’ve had, and student outcomes may differ from previous years. We have seen a majority of students and families putting their best effort forward. We appreciate your help in continuing to support your child at home and cohort day attendance.
We also know that regardless of the effort put in, it can still be a struggle to complete work and you may notice that your child's academics are lower than in pre-pandemic time. If your student is struggling please reach out to your child’s teacher so they can understand how to better support your family. We are all in this together and we want the best outcome possible for your child this year.
As you may have heard, Moscow School District is considering a return to four days a week. This would mean students would attend M/T/Th/F. Wednesdays would continue to be remote. If this occurs it would be no earlier than February 2nd, which is the start of the new semester. I expect to hear word on what they are planning to do within the next couple of weeks. I will inform our families immediately after a decision has been made.
Here are many of the factors that the district will need in making the decision to fully return to face-to-face instruction.
Numbers of transmissions within the school district
Number of positive cases within the district
Review of attendance trends
Availability of substitutes
Based on a 7-day moving average, new daily cases must be less than 1 case per 10,000 population (for Latah County that would be 4 or fewer new daily cases)
Based on a 7-day moving average, the number of confirmed COVID-19 hospital admissions district-wide must be within the range of 0-5
Testing access for staff
Testing access for the community
Test results must be reported in 1-4 days
Written support by the regional Public Health Director
Written support by the local Chief Medical Officer
Be within either Stage 3 or better (State and Local)
Board Approval
In our current time, there are many factors that would prevent us from going back by February 2nd. Our average cases have been in the range of 10 to 30 per day. Also, a big factor is that the state would have to move back to stage 3. As a reminder masks would still be required, per the city ordinance. (On a side note please remember to wash your child's mask and if they do not have one we have extras at the front door of the middle school.)
If a decision is made to return to four days a week, those families that are fully remote will have the option to remain online, but there will not be an option for only two days a week. If families have a positive case or need to quarantine, online learning will still be available.
I am working on a survey to send out to families this week to help gather input on this possible transition.
Thank you for all you do and for being part of our MCS Community!!!
Sincerely,
Tony Bonuccelli

Reminder: We have a few days off over the course of the next several weeks.
- Monday, January 18th is MLK, Jr./Idaho Human Rights Day and there will be no school
- Friday, January 29th + Monday, February 1st are both teacher workdays and there will be no school
During those weeks, we will have school on Wednesday so our hybrid students will still have 2 days of in person learning. I will provide reminders throughout the month. Here is also a link to our school calendar: MCS School Calendar 20-21
