Happy New Year! I hope this finds you having enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and a great Winter Break!

Just prior to break, we held our celebratory BBQ in honor of winning highest attendance for the month of October. While we have had to relinquish the trophy for now, this is an award we are hoping to win again. We appreciate the dedicated efforts of all Roadrunners to make this possible.

Also just prior to break, our Nohl Canyon VEX Robotics team had a great showing in competition held at Crescent Elementary. Way to go NC VEX!

As we welcome students back to campus, this month, each teacher will recognize a Student of the Month. We appreciate all of our students working toward our character building traits built on the John Wooden Pyramid of Success. Our focus for the month of January is that of Cooperation.

In addition, a new series of After School Programs are close to beginning. Please see the link to the left to go straight to these great offerings (scroll below if viewing on a cell phone). Signups are happening now.

We thank all students, parents, families, and our NCSA for their support during our Holiday Gift Shop. The shop was a bid success and will help Nohl Canyon with a significant discount on our upcoming Carnival in April.

For those Roadrunners interested in Run Club, join us Thursday evening in the TLC for an information meeting regarding Run Club and the OC Marathon in May.

Please keep in mind, Monday, January 15th will be a no school day due to the MLK, Jr. Holiday.

For planning purposes, please save the date for the Music and VAPA showcases on January 25th. TK-Grades 4 will perform prior to Noon. VAPA showcases will take place 1:00-2:20pm.

This month's focus for our Student of the Month will include COOPERATION - “Be more interested in finding the best way, not in having your way.”

Working together with others requires teamwork. If you wish to be heard, listen. Cooperation means working together in all ways to accomplish the common goal. It also allows individuals to move forward together instead of going off in different directions. Two horses pulling a wagon must move in the same direction or the wagon does not move.

Congratulations to Alana Arreguin for winning the NC Yearbook Cover Contest. Alana's winning entry will serve as the cover for our upcoming yearbook. We thank all students for submissions. We had some great entries. Thank you Roadrunners for all of your efforts!

If you are interested in helping with our student drop-off or pick-up, we always welcome volunteers. Work as many or as few days as you are able, morning and/or afternoon. All helpers welcome! Stop by and talk with us in the morning or afternoon or let our Front office staff know if you are interested.

Nohl Canyon Run Club is returning! Please join us, Thursday, January 11th @ 5:30pm for an information night with Ms. Gardner in The Learning Center (TLC).

The OC Marathon Foundation is excited to host the 20th Annual Kids Run the OC Training Program which involves over 160 elementary schools throughout Orange County. Each school involved will conduct an on-campus or virtual training program. By the end of the program, each student will have accumulated the equivalent of 25.2 miles through various games and activities They will finish their “marathon” by participating in the Kids Run the OC Marathon 1-Mile Run on May 4, 2024 at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, CA.

KIDS RUN THE OC REGISTRATION In order for your child to complete the program and receive the marathon medal, you must register for the Kids Run the OC 1-Mile Event online ($29.00 fee). To register online, please visit www.kidsruntheoc.org and register your child. The LAST DAY for online registration is March 1, 2024. THE OC MARATHON FOUNDATION NO LONGER ACCEPTS OFFLINE REGISTRATION. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact your KROC coach to find alternative ways to register.

Please join us of our NC Music and VAPA showcases on January 25th. Primary through 4th Grades will perform prior to Noon. VAPA programs will perform 1:00-2:20pm. Grade 6 - 1:00-1:30. Grade 5 - 1:50-2:20.

The LCAP is a three-year plan that describes the goals, actions, services, and expenditures to support positive student outcomes that address state and local priorities. The LCAP provides an opportunity for LEAs (county office of education [COE], school districts and charter schools) to share their stories of how, what, and why programs and services are selected to meet their local needs.

We encourage all students and families to complete this survey as your input is valuable at ensuring that we are meeting the needs of our community.

We are excited to share with you that Orange Unified will be offering an elementary student "Invention Convention" this year as a part of our Community Science Night scheduled April 19th, 2024. All interested K-6 students are invited to submit. Students may submit as individuals or through a group or class project.

Nohl Canyon uses a "Staggered" Start and dismissal to provide some relief with traffic. Supervision in front of school begins at 7:40 am. After dismissal, supervision ends at 2:40 pm. All students need to be picked up by 2:40 pm.

The OUSD Special Education Department will be hosting a variety of parent workshops this school year on a variety of topics. The next workshop on January 26th involves coping skills and strategies. Check out the flyer linked below for more workshops to come.

This year your child has an opportunity to be tested as part of the universal screening and identification process for the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) in the Orange Unified School District. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students with unique and outstanding learning abilities. Testing will occur during the week of January 29th-February 2, 2024.

Thank you for making our parking lot procedures during drop-off and pick-up a safe and efficient machine. We serve a large number of vehicles in short period of time.

Thank you for your continued help with a few critical items:

• Please remember our Lower lot is Staff Only Parking. The lower entrance on Nohl Canyon RD is ENTRANCE ONLY in the Afternoon for Middle Lane traffic going to park in the FAR lot. Two-way use of this entrance presents a significant hazard to entering cars and pedestrian traffic.
• Please be kind to our parking lot volunteers. They make the whole thing work.
• Please ask your kiddos to walk when in front of school. Running children in the pick up area presents several hazards. Safety is our first priority.
• Trinity School Parking Lot is CLOSED for drop-off and pick-up parking.

• Parents, with respect to Trinity Pre-School and their families, we are not allowing Nohl Canyon families to park in the Trinity parking lot. Please follow this guideline and support us in keeping a positive community relationship with Trinity School. Trinity will often allow us to use their lot for special events but should not be used for drop-off or pick-up.
• Please remain clear of the Trinity lawn areas. Trinity lawns should not be used for student waiting for drop-off or pick-up. Students should always be picked up from our school site. If students are still here after 2:40pm, we bring them behind our school gates into our QUAD area for safety until parent pick-up. Please do not have your students wait at the Trinity site for pick-up.
• Please be sure to use crosswalks when crossing all major roads. Students being dropped off on Nohl Canyon Rd. and then proceeding across the street, presents a significant hazard to those students.
• Keep in mind, the Nohl Canyon Rd. entrance to our parking area is only to be used during afternoon pick-up and is limited to Middle Lane traffic that is pulling all the way through the lot to park in the back school lot.

Enclosed please find the 2023-2024 Volunteer Guidance Memo. Note that the application has been streamlined and many of the trainings have been eliminated.

Volunteers will need to complete the following based on hours:

· Volunteers who work more than five hours per week - Volunteers who work more than five hours per week must obtain a fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations and submit to a tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment/examination. Volunteers are responsible for all associated costs.

· Volunteers who work less than five hours per week - A Megan’s Law registered sex offender check will be completed for volunteers who work less than 5 hours.

Volunteers will also be required to submit proof of their completed Mandated Reporter Training (60 min) and the Districts Illness and Injury Prevention Program (5-10 min). Please call Natalie Montoya at 714-628-5515 with any questions or concerns.

As Fall is upon us, and the seasons are changing, please take a moment to review the Nohl Canyon Uniform Policy:

Nohl Canyon has a student uniform policy that is in alignment with the districts uniform policy. Schools whose students wear uniforms have indicated that a uniform policy is a creative and positive way to increase student achievement and decreases student behavioral problems. Based upon the interest of Nohl Canyon parents and staff, our school will continue with our Student Uniform Policy.

The Villa Park HS Dance team is hosting a Dance Clinic for students TK-8th again this year in January. VPHS would love to have Nohl Canyon students attend! The cost is $50, and students get the opportunity to perform at a VP Varsity basketball game.

The KIDS CORNER section of the newsletter will be a place to highlight our Roadrunner Students succeeding in outside activities. Nohl Canyon has a wide range of students in a variety of activities; Dance, Gymnastics, Equestrian, Cheer, Karate, Tennis, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey..plus many more. If you would like to highlight your child, please send Mr. Strickland a photo and description of your child to be highlighted.

Nohl Canyon kiddos visited the Orange Fire Station Number 8 to drop off toys for the Spark of Toy Drive.

Nohl Canyon Girl Scouts bought and donated toys to Spark of Love and Orange City Fire over Winter Break. The toys were purchased from money the girls earned by selling Girl Scout cookies. Thank you Girls!

Morgan Arrabaca and Emily Jun made it to the finals in the OC Tournament of Champions with their soccer team, Boca OC! Way to work hard girls!
