Department special events
- Portfolio Panels - Each semester, student teaching candidates present their portfolios to a panel of Coe faculty and supervisors. The meeting is formal and similar to an interview. Panel members ask candidates to discuss teaching and learning experiences, as well as reflect about professional readiness. Students' portfolios include rationales and artifacts that showcase "inTASC" model standards, such as understanding of K-12 learners, content knowledge, instruction, and professional responsibilities. The panels concluded May 3.
- Celebrating Betsy - This summer marks Betsy Kigin's 20th year with Coe! If you've communicated with our program, you've communicated with Betsy. She's central to operations. In particular, as the coordinator of field placements, she has placed hundreds of students in schools for observations, Practicum, Methods, and student teaching. Betsy is a champion of education. We welcome you to send her a congratulations. (Email: BKigin@coe.edu, Snail: Stuart Hall, 1220 First Ave. Cedar Rapids, 52402)
- Passing the Torch to new student teachers -- In this semester tradition, outgoing student teachers provide insights about K-12 teaching to the incoming group of student teachers. Hearing directly from seniors about how to plan, prepare, and navigate the semester experience is a helpful--and enjoyable--presentation (photos below). The Fall '23 group begins its seminar work together in early August.

Partners in education- Thank you!
- We are grateful for school partnerships and school districts' sustained commitment to grow the profession. Thank you!
- We cannot say enough about our K-12 cooperating teachers who choose to "pay it forward" and mentor teaching candidates, even in the midst of already-busy professional lives. We value your time, energy, and expertise.
- As a liberal arts college, faculty from a variety of studies impact learners in Teacher Education. We thank faculty of Biology, English, French, History, Kinesiology, Science, and Spanish who joined Portfolio Panels and provided feedback for graduating teacher candidates.
- We have an extraordinary team of veteran supervising teachers that coach teaching candidates. Your passion for education is contagious. Graduates will likely keep you on speed dial!
