December 2023
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Where has the time gone? December is already upon us, and with it comes a change in the air and a flurry of activity. Not only can we feel the chill outside, but the hustle and bustle of the season is also undeniable. As we get closer to the break, it's hard not to reflect on the time that has passed so quickly. It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming our students back to school, and now we're only two weeks away from the winter break.
Despite the hustle and bustle of this time of year, our scholars are continuing to work hard and make progress in their studies. We are so proud of their dedication and commitment to learning.
As the holidays approach, I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our families a happy, safe, and healthy holiday season and winter break. May this time be filled with warmth, joy, and cherished moments spent with loved ones.
We deeply appreciate the opportunity to work alongside all of you in guiding and supporting your children on their journey to success. Your partnership is invaluable to us, and we are truly grateful for your trust and collaboration.
We look forward to welcoming back all of our scholars refreshed and rejuvenated in the new year!

December Character Trait
This month we are having conversations and experiences with our scholars to help us develop the social-emotional skill of Empathy! We are using this definition at school:
Empathy: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.
Empathy is an important skill for creating connected and kind communities. It is critical to our relationships both personal and professional. There is a huge need for Empathy in our world because, as anxiety increases in our culture, Empathy decreases. Even though we have lots of digital connections, we need a lot of training on in-person communication and understanding! So we are working to develop a few key skills in order to live more empathetic lives. First, developing an “emotional vocabulary” to make sure we have the words to understand and describe what we are feeling personally. Second, being able to connect with others based on their feelings even though we may not have the exact same story or perspective as someone else. Finally, we will think about how listening and sharing help create more Empathy in our classroom and the world. There will be some powerful activities and some amazing conversations inspired by people like Brenè Brown and Dr. Oz. It will be a wonderful experience for your child and (hopefully) you!
Here are some questions you may want to ask and talk with your child at home to connect what we are doing at school. These are great conversations to have around the dinner table.
- How do you know what you are feeling? How can you tell how someone else is feeling?
- When do you feel most excited? Most upset? Most happy? Most sad?
- How do you show Empathy towards your friends when they are sad?
- What are things others might do when they’re sad, worried or frustrated? What might they say?
- What gets in the way of us showing Empathy to one another?
- What is the difference between sympathy and Empathy?
- What is a conflict that you had recently with someone? How do you think they were feeling and why may they have been feeling that way? How could you respond to that situation with Empathy?
What does it mean to be "On-Track" to graduate?
What our scholars do before they get to high school matters. We are laying that foundation that will help them be successful. It starts now! Even though we don't have students earning credits in middle school or elementary school these foundational skills and habits are a predictor of their success. It is never too early to think about their future as a high school student, it will be here before we know it.
Their ninth grade year is a critical year for students on their path to graduation. Studies have shown that students who are on track to graduate in ninth grade are more likely to graduate on time.

Here are some tips for helping your child stay on track right now:
- Make sure your child attends school regularly. Attendance is one of the most important factors in student success.
- Talk to your child about their schoolwork. Ask them about their classes and how they are doing.
- Help your child set goals for their schoolwork. Break down large goals into smaller, more manageable steps.
- Get involved in your child's education. Attend school events and volunteer your time.

IPAD INSURANCE
iPad insurance is $25 per student. It may be paid through ParentVue or by sending check or cash to school with your scholar. We highly recommend this insurance. You never know when an accident is going to happen. If you have not paid the insurance then you will be responsible for the cost to fix or replace the iPad.
IPad insurance is an annual fee. If you had insurance for the 2023-24 school year it is still effective until September 6, 2023. During the 2023-2024 school year, EPSD9 will continue to offer optional iPad insurance to students and families. The annual insurance will be effective from September 6, 2023-September 5, 2024. The cost for the insurance is $25.00. Without insurance, students will be responsible for all repair or replacement costs. If your student did not have iPad insurance for the 2023-24 school year, students will need to bring their iPad to the office to verify the condition of the iPad prior to acceptance of your insurance payment. Please click on this link for more information on iPad Insurance.
