Bear Creek Families,
Thank you all for the successful first week. I do believe that students and staff may take a nap or two this weekend. The first week of school is typically tiring. We are all getting back into the routine of setting the alarm clock and staying active all day. I was proud to see our Cubs end the week so strong. Your students were fantastic as we tweaked systems and worked for the good of the group.
Please note below about the dates and times for Back to School Nights. These are an hour set aside for you to meet with your child's teacher. We are offering two nights so that families with multiple aged children have the best chance to see all classrooms. Parking is always tricky. We will reserve the Bus Loop behind campus for Golf Cart parking.
First Lego League
Hi Bear Creek Families,
This school year we would like our students to participate in First Lego League (FLL) again. Last year we had three teams and they did an amazing job and learnt a lot about energy, team building and presentation skills. It was a great experience for all the participants.
For those who are not aware, this league runs across the nation and gives kids a platform to work as a team and propose solutions to real world problems using Legos. Depending on the age group, the level of participation and engagement varies.
This year’s theme is MASTERPIECESM where students will explore, imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
More information on starting a team can be found @ https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll/start-a-team

The success of this program is highly dependent on parent participation. The roles include parents who can coach and co-coach, who can help with coordination of different activities etc.
The time commitment needed from children and coaches can vary from 1-3 hours per week. Typical team size is about 2-10 student participants (varies based on the age group) and 2 coaches.
In order to assess interest, families can fill in the survey below.

We will have a kickoff session Next week to give more information.
PS: The school staff is supportive of this effort but will not be involved in managing or running any of
the activities.

Cafeteria News
No lunch visitors until the week of August 28th. This allows our students and staff to polish routines and tighten systems. Thank you for your assistance with this. When packing your child's lunch, make sure that items packed are ones that they can open themselves.
Breakfast is available each day. If students wish to eat breakfast in the cafeteria, they need to arrive to campus prior to 7:30 am. Breakfast is to be consumed in the cafeteria. Due to ongoing concerns with ants in the building, grade levels are designating snack times and procedures so that children will be aware of cleaning up after themselves.

Policy Update
Please see this important message from Austin ISD
The Austin ISD Student Success Guide (Student Code of Conduct) is now available on the Austin ISD District website for students, parents, and guardians to review. One important legislative update is that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited. House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette (new) while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event. Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to talk to their students about this new policy and review the Student Success Guide to help keep our schools safe for students and staff. For resources to use when talking with your student about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes visit https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/.
