I’m a big fan of the underdog. I’ve seen all the Rocky movies and love the soundtracks. (For the record, Rocky IV is the best) Anytime I hear Eye of the Tiger, it takes me back to 1982 when I saw Rocky III and when every high school band played it in the stands to spur their football team on to victory. Good times! :)
These lyrics come to mind because yesterday, we hosted professional BMX bikers on the No Hate Tour. Their tricks were amazing and their message was the reason we missed a little bit of class! Our students heard about the athletes’ own experiences with bullying and what they did to persevere and rise above their haters. Our students witnessed years of hard work and dedication as the athletes performed, but they also heard of the times when they failed and had to get back up again. They shared about times when people laughed at their dreams and it only strengthened their resolve, of times when they truly needed a friend to help them along the way.

As the leaders of Lago Vista High School, we have a shared responsibility to inspire our students to dream big, work hard, and reach their full potential. We also have a responsibility to teach them to take responsibility for their actions, to help others, and to be kind. Through the LVHS Project Vinátta group, we are a proud No Place for Hate school. Vinátta is the Viking term for “friendship” and our symbol is the Norse rune for “humankind”. This ancient symbol represents all of humanity joined together for the purposes of attaining a common goal, and it reminds us to value those around us. Our family, friends and community are crucial to happiness and flourishing. Our shared humanity should unite us in developing patience and compassion.
The goal of Project Vinátta is to create a positive and safe climate for all students and to combat bias, bullying, and hatred at our school. We want all Vikings to feel like valued members of our community and to be respected for who they are.
Sometimes, we can shake off the haters, and sometimes we need to stand up and say something. Striking the balance between the two can be difficult. This is one reason why we work to build relationships- so that every student has at least one caring adult at LVHS that they can turn to in times of need. We hope your child has their “safe person” on campus and that they will seek help when they need it.
Here’s what we know for sure: We are better together. We are better when WE ALL ROW.
