Art Class Highlight
2nd Grade
This week 2nd grade is finishing their unit on Greek sculptures. Students learned about balance, symmetry, and Contrapposto in Greek sculpture. Then they watched a short National Geographic video about a contemporary stone carver, Anna Rubincam, who makes stone sculptures today. Here is the link if you would like to watch this 8-minute inspiring video. Then students used air-hardening modeling clay to make their own sculptures of chess pieces. It was a fun experience learning how difficult it is to make an accurate sculpture. Greek sculpture is amazing!
3rd Grade
Mrs. Vining's third-grade class has been learning about Byzantine art. This era of artwork includes many Christian mosaics and icon paintings, and architecturally speaking, it includes the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul Turkey--a truly magnificent building! See this link below to learn more about this amazing Catholic Church which has been repurposed into an Islamic Mosque that is still in use today. To end this unit, students made a copy of an icon of Mary. It possesses the key character of Byzantine stylized portraits which are heavy in symbolism. It is a beautiful way of painting that is still practiced today.
Meet our Staff Members
When I'm not working, I love to travel and enjoy crafting! I love spending time with my husband and 2 boys. Three words to best describe me are caring, enthusiastic, and determined. My favorite book is Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss.
