NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Community,
This time of year is always an exciting time for us as it brings about a season of celebrations around the District. From recent gatherings to upcoming events, our schools and organizations continue to shine with celebrations that honor our students' accomplishments and recognize the dedication of our valued partners.
The last few weeks have been filled with Lunar New Year performances and festivities around AUSD, culminating in the Asian American Association’s (AAA) annual dinner last Friday evening. We enjoyed a sumptuous 10-course dinner and talented lion dancers while honoring three outstanding scholarship recipients (Alton Zhang, AHS; Eva Wong, MKHS; and Vivian Nguyen, SGHS), who were each awarded $1,000 to pursue their educational endeavors. (Please scroll further down to see some highlights of the joyous event, filled with laughter, delicious food, and rich cultural traditions.)
Next Friday, our PTAs celebrate almost 80 Honorary Service Award (HSA) recipients at their annual dinner. PTAs are essential to the success of our schools, and we look forward to joining PTA in expressing gratitude to the support and commitment of individuals who truly make a difference in the lives of our students. I am thrilled to announce that both Repetto School and Granada School are in the final stages of organizing new PTA units. By the end of this school year, ALL AUSD schools will have an active PTA - an accomplishment of which we are extremely proud! Thank you to the parents who are volunteering to serve in leadership roles in these reactivated PTAs, and to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen. We are looking forward to having these two schools join us in celebrating their own HSAs next year!
Before you know it, the Alhambra Latino Association's (ALA) Scholarship Dinner & Dance will be upon us, offering yet another chance to celebrate our diversity and unity as a community. This festive event will not only be a celebration of culture but also of the achievements of another group of outstanding AUSD young scholars. Save the date (May 3rd) and we will share more information as it becomes available.
Events put on by our partner organizations raise funds to provide scholarships to our students and/or provide support for site/district programs and activities. Throughout these gatherings, we honor not only our students' achievements but also the invaluable contributions of our partners who work tirelessly to enrich the educational experience of every child in our district. Their dedication and collaboration are a testament to the strength of our collective spirit, and are key reasons AUSD continues to thrive and succeed.
As we come together in celebration, let us cherish these moments of joy and camaraderie. Together, we will continue to foster an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can flourish and reach their full potential. Thank you for your ongoing support and participation in our community's festivities. I look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events and continuing to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students and partners.
Warmest regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Page-To-Stage is a long-standing partnership project between MKHS and Brightwood School. Each year, Brightwood fourth-grade students write original stories. Then, MKHS Advanced Drama students, under the guidance of Ms. Page Phillips create vignettes based on those stories. The high school students write, stage, and rehearse these short plays, which are set to original pieces of music composed by orchestra students (under the direction of Mr. Justin Lee). Congratulations to this year's selected Brightwood fourth-grade authors: Samuel Lam, Josephine Lee & Joshua Lee!
Congratulations to Ms. Lindsay Gilbert, principal of Northrup School. Ms. Gilbert was named AUSD’s latest recipient of the "Excellence in Leadership" award for all the hard work, dedication, and leadership she demonstrates daily with the students, families, and staff members of Northrup School. Fun Fact: Did you know...Ms. Gilbert's mother, Marsha Gilbert was also principal of Northup, and Ms. Gilbert actually spent time in the principal's office...in her baby carrier.
Congratulations to these Alhambra High School students who excelled at the recent SkillsUSA Regional Competition. Julian Corona received GOLD in Medical Terminology and Jadin Kennedy placed 9th in Medical Math. Thank you to Lisa Lau (Academy Lead for the Academy of Health Sciences) for sharing the news with us.
On Friday, February 15th, Brightwood students enjoyed a STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) Fair, courtesy of JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and Mr. Michael Hillman, sixth grade science teacher. The students visited two booths hosted by JPL which included a model rover, while Mr. Hillman and his students ran a penny boat demonstration and competition.
The community is invited to support Brightwood School as they present their enchanting production of Into the Woods Jr. (music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim). Mark your calendars for April 25th & 26th at 6:00pm to witness the magic unfold on stage. This performance promises to be a treat for all ages. Tickets are available at the door for just $2, so don't miss out on this opportunity to experience the talent and creativity of Brightwood's young performers.
Los Amigos De Fremont & the Fremont PTA have partnered together to bring 123 Andres (Andres Salguero and Christina Sanabriato) for lively and interactive performances in both English and Spanish. CalKIDS also provides “seed” money for ALL children (regardless of family income level) born in California after July 1, 2022.
The state automatically provides a $25 initial deposit. Parents who register through CalKIDS.org to view their child’s account will receive an additional $25. Parents can also visit ScholarShare529.com and open a college savings account for their children. If parents link it to their CalKIDS account, they will receive an additional $50 contribution. Low-income families whose children were in grades 1-12 at a California public school as of October 6, 2021 already have CalKIDS accounts in each child’s name with an initial deposit of $500. Foster youth receive an additional $500, and those identified as homeless receive another $500 (potentially $1,500 total for children who are most in need).
