Student Spotlight: How is Estefanía Henríquez Luthje's MCH Program Experience Inspiring Her Desire to Establish an MCH Center in the Dominican Republic?

Estefanía Henríquez Luthje (she/her) (MPH 2024), a Fulbright Foreign Student at #UMNMCH, shares a personal reflection on her background as an M.D. in the Dominican Republic, current experience managing the Health Equity Edition of the National MCH Trainee Blog (MCH Leads), and future hopes to establish a Center for MCH in the Dominican Republic. Estefanía shared that “As I pack my bags to return home, I carry with me the inspiration to one day establish a similar initiative to the Center for MCH in the Dominican Republic. I am confident that the children, women, and families in my country will benefit from such a transcendent endeavor.”

MCH Leads Blog: Navigating County-Level Public Health - A Journey in MCH Knowledge, Ethics, and Community Engagement

Hianca Pinho, a recent graduate affiliated with the University of Iowa’s MCH Catalyst Program, is the featured author in February’s Health Equity Edition of MCH Leads. In this post, Hianca reflects on the path that led to her current role as the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Coordinator at Johnson County Public Health, a position she secured shortly after graduation. Bright Spots Mini-Lab: Introductory NVivo Workshop

Thursday, March 21, 2024 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM CT | Virtual

In this session, Dr. Michael Beckstrand will lead a hands-on workshop about NVivo, a qualitative data management and coding software that aids in qualitative and mixed-methods research. Participants will learn how to add source materials, work with concepts and definitions to apply to their source materials, make annotations, and query and manage their work. Having NVivo software already available is highly recommended to get the most out of this session, but you are welcome to follow along without software. Free, virtual, and open to all! CE credits available.

Positive Self-Care Practices Can Reduce Black Kinship Caregivers’ Stress | Child Trends

While the benefits of kinship care for Black children are significant, so can be the costs for Black kinship caregivers. A new study that included 12 Black kinship caregivers points to promising ways to mitigate some of those costs via self-care practices.

Web Pages: Doula and Birth Worker Information

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has created web pages for Doulas and Birth Workers in Minnesota Doulas in Minnesota and Information for Families. MDH is also inviting doulas and birth workers to complete this form if they’d like to be included on the forthcoming interactive Help Me Connect webpage so that birthing people, families, and providers can use this list to search for a doula who best fits their needs. More information and a wider communications campaign are planned for spring/summer 2024.

Briefs: Health Equity Briefs

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a set of health equity data briefs on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The briefs cover Mental Health/Substance Use Disorder Services, the Section 1915(c) Waiver Program, and Well-Child Visits.

Report: Maternal and Early Childhood Mental Health

This report from the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families recommends concrete steps state Medicaid agencies can take to address mental health among mothers and infants in the postpartum year highlighting recent federal actions with implications for state action. Toolkit: Family Voices United to End Racism Against Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs (CYSHCN) and their Families

This toolkit offers shareable documents and multi-media resources to help with the important work of dismantling racism, being more culturally competent as an organization, and building and developing meaningful engagement with families.

Recording: Perinatal Substance Use Special Issue in the MCH Journal

This special issue of the MCH Journal builds on the evidence base, with 21 open articles that feature the latest research, program, and policy initiatives in perinatal substance use disorder (SUD).

Tool: Strategies for Developing Culturally Driven Public Health Communications

The Public Health Communications Collaborative and Hispanic Communications Network co-created this tool to support public health communicators in effectively communicating with multicultural audiences. This guide is divided into three sections–messaging, visuals, and outreach–to support the development of public health communications. Each section offers strategies and tools for creating materials that build stronger relationships, increase credibility, and improve health outcomes.
