Franklin Middle School
January Newsletter 2023
Principal's Message
Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
As everyone heads out for the holidays, I wish you all safe travels, good food, and peace to all! I am delighted to say that when everyone returns in January, I will be among them!
Thank you, Mr. Espindola, for stepping up while I was gone-you did a wonderful job!
SNOW RELATED ITEMS
We do not make up delayed start days, so we are still on track to end school on June 15th. If we do have a closure day, we will lose days from the end of February break. More on that later…
Also, if it has been a rough year and there is a need in your household for winter clothing, please do not hesitate to call the school. We have several resources we can tap into to help. And, maybe it is not your family but one you know that works too. There is no reason a student should be without a coat, hat, mittens, and boots. We are here, and we want to help! 573-2100.
Shovel your sidewalks-it is your duty. Too many students must walk in the street because sidewalks are impassable. Hand them a shovel; they can help clear your sidewalk and, maybe, the neighbors. Lastly, traffic congestion on 19th is tough most days-the. Snow exasperates it. Remember, it is a right turn only on Tieton.
WINTER FESTIVAL AND CONCERTS
Thank you to everyone who turned out. The students really appreciate your attendance. And the winter festival, Mr. Espindola’s brilliant idea, saw great participation and attendance too! We hope you noticed our new tree in the commons-every ornament on the tree was hand decorated by a Franklin student!
GRADES
The end of the 2nd quarter, and first semester, is January 24th. Midterm grades should be out soon, and students have plenty of time to turn in missing or late work. If you need to learn how to access grades, ask your student to access them-they do know how.
MARTIN LUTHER KING HOLIDAY
I was 13 and watching the evening news with my parents when Walter Cronkite announced that: “At 6:05 P.M. on Thursday, 4 April 1968, Martin Luther King was shot dead while standing on a balcony outside his second-floor room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.” Even as a middle-school student, the senselessness of his death left a profound impact on me…as did his message of non-violent protest. So we honor his work on January 16th, a school holiday, and I hope his words will resurrect the feelings of unity, so many of us felt back then.
I am wishing all of you peace and happiness in 2023.
Principal Anderson

Pick-up and Drop-off Reminder
Parents, we would like to thank you for following our Pick-up and Drop-off routes. Since we have returned from break, we would like to remind you about the routes.
We also ask that you refrain from using the parking lot on 19th during drop-off and pick-up time. We have noticed congestion in the parking lot and cars trying to weave in between parked vehicles; this causes an unsafe situation. We will be blocking off the parking lot during pick-up and drop-off times. Please continue to pick your students up at the Arches on 19th. Thank you for your understanding.
Intervention and Enrichment
Parents, as a way to allow students to catch up on work and engage in enriching activities, we have two days each quarter where we adjust the schedule to assign students to interventions to receive support if they are failing a class or enrichment if they are passing all classes.
Library Spotlight
The Franklin Library had a makers space activity during December 12-18th. Students were able to make their own bookmarks and have it laminated to take home. This was in thanks to Brian Durr, Librarian at Washington Middle School, who began this tradition and shared it with Franklin's librarian, Michele Tetreault. Thank you Mrs. Tetreault!

PBIS NEWS
BOLT STORE OPEN
We have opened our PBIS BOLT Store. We encourage teachers to recognize positive behavior daily by giving students our PBIS Rewards incentive called a BOLT. Students can collect BOLTS and spend them at our BOLT Store, which will be open every Friday.
Our Grand Opening was held on Friday, September 30th and it was met with a positive reception. Our students were excited about the items that were being sold, they were excited that they could use their BOLTS to buy items of high interest to them. Some of those items include snacks, keychains, tumbler cups with a Franklin logo, stickers for computers and phones, and much more. We will continue to ask students what items they feel should be in our store.
We have an amazing team of staff members on our PBIS team that have made this BOLT Store possible. They have donated items to the store that students find of value. Our staff works hard to make sure that we are recognizing when students have pride in our school and are following the Franklin Way.
If you are interested in donating to our PBIS BOLT Store, please reach out to the Franklin Middle School office for more information.
Attendance
Migrant Education Program
The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. The goal also includes collaboration with migratory parents and the collective community to provide a full range of services to address unique educational needs. The Washington State Migrant Education Program (MEP) is federally funded to ensure high-quality education programs and supplemental support services for migratory children. Migratory families often have trouble receiving continuous, high-quality educational services because of their high rate of mobility, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, health-related problems, disruption of their children’s education, and the lack of resources in the areas in which they live and work.
The Migrant Education Program is authorized under Part C of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended. Federal funds are allocated to OSPI based on per pupil expenditure for education and counts of eligible migratory children, ages 3 to 21, residing within the state. OSPI authorizes the sub-grants to local education agencies (school districts), institutions of higher education and other public and non-profit agencies.
Services offered to migrant children and their families may include:- Supplemental academic programs to assist in the achievement of state academic standards
- Instructional training
- Health programs
- Preschool programs (readiness, transitioning to elementary education)
- Family home visiting and academic counseling services
- Parental involvement
- Migrant student data and collection
- Student leadership opportunities
- Summer school programs
- Secondary credit accrual and exchange
- Grants for supplemental secondary services, dropout prevention and retrieval and alternative education programs
For more information, please contact Ms. Deisy Rodriguez, our Franklin Middle School Migrant Education Advocate. Rodriguez.Deisy@ysd7.org

Winter Festival
On December 13th, Franklin hosted a Winter Festival. It was a hands on experience with a STEAM focus. Ranging from cookie decorating, ornament making, math guessing, origami, wood cutouts and prizes for all. Parents and guardians smiled as they witnessed students realizing that Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math are Fun!
Franklin Christmas Tree
Franklin has a new Christmas tree in the commons. It came with lights, but it did not come with decorations. Franklin students colored ornaments for the Christmas tree. Lots of talented artists! Students took them home on the last day before Christmas Vacation.
Winter Concerts
Franklin packed the house with the sounds of music
For two evenings the Franklin gymnasium was transformed into a concert hall. The concerts began on Tuesday, December 6th, Mrs. Petillo showcased orchestra and choir students with music selections from classical to contemporary. Then on Thursday, December 8th, Mr. Petillo featured his band students and ended the night with an amazing Jazz ensemble.
Notice what Mr. Petillo had to say after the event: "I want to thank all the staff members and families present at tonight's band concert! The students love seeing you all there, and the support and help the program received this evening in putting together tonight's show was phenomenal. The students and I have never felt more valued than we have tonight, and from the bottom of my heart and the young musicians here at Franklin, we sincerely want to offer our thanks for making this the best and most supportive middle school for music!"
Winter 2 Sports Registration
Winter 2 Sports registrations will be opened from December 12th through January 25th. Please make sure to register your student on Family ID and submit a copy of their sports physical. If your student has already registered and participated in a sport, simply register them for a Winter 2 sport. The sports for Winter 2 will be Boys Basketball and Girls Bowling. If you have any questions please contact Franklin Middle School. Thank you!
