NEWS & NOTES March 24, 2023
Marty's Minute
I hope you all had a good first week of spring. The weather seems to be warming up and I'm grateful that spring break is around the corner.
During last night's Board of Directors meeting, we provided an update on our current plans for the 2023-24 school year budget reductions. As you all know, our district is facing a $5.69 million dollar budget cut.
Until the Legislature adopts a budget later this spring, we will not know the exact amount of reductions that we need to make. While great uncertainty persists regarding our state and federal funding for next school year, we are taking appropriate actions to prepare for reductions by working closely with principals, other staff, and association leaders to ensure a quality educational program.
Timeline:
- April 10th-21st: Unofficial communication with staff that may be affected by reductions.
- April 24th - Washington Legislation Session Ends. Districts will know more about funding.
- April 27th: Board will take action on the reduction plan.
- April 28th - May 15th: Official communication to affected employees.

Ending the Silence for Staff - Youth Mental Health Presentation
Youth mental health education is a timely, urgent community need in Clallam County.
Join Deidra Burke, MSW and Kody Morris from NAMI Washington to discuss how school staff and youth organizational staff can approach youth who are showing symptoms of a mental health condition and how to work with their families.
The "Ending the Silence for Staff" presentation is an evidence-based presentation that will also include the warning signs of mental health conditions and suicide, facts, and statistics and lived experiences.
You may receive 1 clock hour from Continuing Education for attending the presentation; to request the clock hour or for more information please reach out to Deidra Burke at dburke@namiwa.org.

New Titles - Same Amazing Supports - Native American Education Advocates
Over the years, students and families expressed the negative stigma around the word "interventionist".
In Klallam culture, words are powerful and create the world around us. As partners in education, we have to be mindful of other cultures and how the titles we use make people feel.
Through collaboration with Carmen Watson-Charles, the Native American Education Advocate team, and the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, the new team name came about.
This change highlights the trust, collaboration, and support between staff, students, families, LEKT, and PASD.

PAHS Beautification Day!
On Wednesday 3/23, members of the Rider Crew and Interact Club led a PAHS beautification project.
Rider Crew and Interact Club members and other volunteers worked on five specific areas around campus planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and placing bricks and painted rocks as part of this project. Fourth graders visited and helped with the beatification (painting rocks) and there were several community members present. Superintendent Brewer came by to help with some digging and planting, too. It was a great day with a lot of collaboration, happy students, and sunshine!
Shout out to Rider Crew Advisor Adam Logan and Interact Club Advisor Angie Gooding for making this day happen for the campus and students!

PAHS Thespian Society Presents: The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood
The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood will be performed at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center at 304 E. Park Ave at 6:00 pm Thursday, April 13, 7:00 pm Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15, with a 2:00 pm matinee on Sunday, April 16.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for seniors 60 and older, and free to children under 10. Tickets can be purchased only at the door with cash or check.
The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood is a hysterical spoof on the classic story of Robin Hood. Featuring Monty Pythonesque humor, the story follows our egotistical hero, Robin Hood, as he fights for what’s right, along with the hand of marriage to Lady Marian, of course.
Come prepared for an audience-participation-heavy show, student-directed by Abby Sanford, with assistance from Tado Parsinen.
This spring’s production stars freshmen Emily Boling, Michael Herring, and Charlie Kasten, sophomores Berkley Thompson, Olivia Maeder, Luke Rudell, Jasper Ladd, Dakota Cassinelli, Serenity Romo, and Annabelle Villa, junior Shayla Partridge, and senior Frankie Williams.
The amazing PAHS tech team supports the production, taught by Barry Landry of sophomores Madison McIntyre, Josey Cooley, Lillie Commeree, juniors Xavier Caskey and Makenna. Larson, and seniors Mckenzie Trantham, Megan Boyd, Zelby Gloria, and many more!
