Families with students in the Hybrid program, please remember that there is no supervision prior to 8:45. Please do not drop your student off unsupervised prior to 8:45.

Also, when emailing your child in sick remember to email Sato-Attendance@beaverton.k12.or.us AND your child's teacher. Also if your child is experiencing primary COVID symptoms or there has been a potential exposure, please let us know so that our school nurse can follow up with you. Both the attendance phone line and the email are confidential.

Same goes for Change of Going Home Plans - email Sato-Attendance@beaverton.k12.or.us AND your child's teacher.

Traffic at dismissal time is getting better but please remember that the bus service is always a great option. We prioritize getting our busses out by 11:25 so that they make their stops on time, if you don't want to wait in the long line of cars, we do suggest taking the bus!

Although much looked very different this year, including our ability to use parent and community volunteers in a virtual and hybrid setting, we still want to give some shout outs!

We thank you for supporting your student in every little detail that went along with Distance Learning and now the shift to Hybrid. We mean it when we say, we couldn't have done it without you!

Because of the pandemic, the Oregon Department of Education requested a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education that would have allowed school districts to skip state testing this spring. However, the federal government denied that request. Therefore, to maintain our federal funding, the Beaverton School District must offer testing to our students.

Parents and guardians have the right to OPT OUT their students from testing.

More on that below.

Shortened versions of the following statewide tests will be offered:

• 3rd Grade: English Language Arts (ELA) & Mathematics
• 4th Grade: English Language Arts (ELA) & Mathematics
• 5th Grade: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics & Science

Testing Times

Elementary (Morning Session**) 9:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

Elementary (Afternoon Session**) 12:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

** Students will be assigned to a morning or afternoon session.

To help us schedule transportation and deliver a safe and successful testing experience for every student, parents need to complete this form below by April 30 whether their student will or will not participate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a student choose to test?

Test scores provide one piece of evidence of student attainment of state standards.

Will students be penalized or receive a negative grade if they don’t test?

No

Will my child’s school be penalized or receive a negative report card rating if my student doesn’t test?

No. The U.S. Department of Education won’t require the Oregon Department of Education to use summative test data for accountability purposes this year.

Will schools be adhering to the same safety protocols as during In-Person Hybrid Instruction?

The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. All safety protocols will be followed including mandatory mask wearing and social distancing.

Who will administer the tests?

School staff who have met training and security requirements will administer the test.

How long is each test?

The Oregon Department of Education has decreased the number of questions in the English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics tests by 40% and removed field test questions from the science test. The estimated testing times are:

• English Language Arts (ELA) 1:15 hr.
• Mathematics 1 hr.
• Science1:20 hr.

Can my student opt to take one test but not another (for example, take English Language Arts (ELA) but not Mathematics)?

Yes

My student needs transportation. When will I find out when and where my student will be picked up and dropped off?

Families will receive an email on May 10 with their students’ routes, bus stop locations and pick-up and drop-off times.

When can I expect to receive my child’s test results?

We expect individual overall student test results will be available in ParentVue in August. Contrary to prior years, the Oregon Department of Education won’t be reporting subscores. For example, in English Language Arts (ELA), students won’t receive subscores in reading, writing, listening and research.

Will test results be used to identify students for TAG or Summa?

No. Statewide, many students continue to learn remotely, and parents may not wish to have their children participate in testing this year. In addition, the circumstances under which students have participated in learning this year have varied widely compared to a traditional school year. If this year’s test participation isn’t representative of students across Oregon, percentiles produced by the Oregon Department of Education won’t be comparable to prior years. While these percentiles may be informative for parents, they won’t be used for identification or placement decisions.

Also, please note that there are no make up dates for students that are unable to attend one of these pre-scheduled dates.

Need Volunteers to Help with Meal Prep at Elementary Schools

There is a need for parent/community volunteers to help with meal prep at all elementary schools. The volunteer shifts would be 1 – 2 hours in the morning to help with bagging up fruit, vegetables, or frozen entrees. Proposed hours are 8 – 10 am for early start schools or 9 – 11 am for regular start schools. Volunteers can be used every day of the week including Wednesdays. Elementary schools will coordinate for volunteers and front office staff can access a list of cleared volunteers through the district's volunteer management software Better Impact. Human Sexuality Curriculum: The Great Body Shop

• Email your child’s teacher requesting to preview The Great Body Shop materials

• Teacher will share instructions on how to create your own account to access the resources

If after previewing materials, you would like to excuse your child from specific lessons, follow the Opt-Out Process by emailing the your child's teacher and the school principal notifying them from which specific lesson/s you would like your child to be opted out of.

As students return to schools for in-person learning this month, arrival and departure times may be different than you are used to. While traffic and activities around Beaverton schools may look different, one thing is for sure – kids are out and about in our community. Some kids may be returning to school buildings while others will be continuing to learn remotely and taking breaks outside during the day. Safety is everyone’s responsibility! Kids are everywhere. #DriveLikeIt.

Driving Safety Tips

Our community needs everyone to drive safely, be alert, and follow traffic laws, especially when observing students walking, biking, skateboarding, and scootering. Let’s work together to keep our students safe!

• Stop for school busses when red lights flash. Both directions of traffic must stop.
• Watch your speed. 20 mph is the school zone speed limit.
• Be ready to stop at all times. Kids may dart into the street without checking for traffic.
• Stop for people at intersections and when asked by the crossing guard. Check your blind spots before turning and behind your vehicle before reversing.
• Drive for conditions – This time of year is often rainy and foggy limiting visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians so keep those headlights on to help others see you.

Please know that during our in-person Hybrid Instruction time, our outdoor school facilities — playgrounds, fields, tracks and paths — will be closed to the general public for the safety of our students and staff.

After school hours, families are welcome to use playgrounds, fields, tracks, and paths after in-person instruction and do so at their own risk. Please be mindful and respectful to staff that continue to work in the buildings after in-person instruction.

Please note that playground equipment will not be sanitized by school staff. Playground visitors are recommended to take precautions for health and safety.

• Follow state guidelines on outdoor recreation activities and face coverings.
• Wash hands before and after visiting the playground.
• Maintain physical distancing of at least 6 feet from people outside your immediate household.
• Bring hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes for use on surfaces you touch.
• Stay home if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19. Symptoms include cough, fever and shortness of breath.
