Cole Miners' Dig

Principal's Notes
It's been a wonderful week of learning at Cole School! On Monday the 5th graders traveled to the Boston Museum of Science while the 4th graders held their Biography Fair. Students in grades K-5 worked to complete the winter screenings in math, ELA, and Social/Emotional Learning as well. Once all of the data has been entered into Aspen, we'll let families know so they can log in to see the results.
The days have been long and somewhat gray and we've noticed that it might be impacting student responses to morning greetings from adults. We're hoping to set a Kindness Goal for the upcoming week to be sure to return a greeting or offer an initial greeting yourself with a "Hello!" or a "Good Morning!" These positive interactions make a big difference in the culture of the school.
A request for help from home :
If you are dropping your child off to school in the morning, please pull around the back of the school. Do not drop off children in the main parking lot in the morning as there are just way too many moving vehicles in that area at that time. Certainly feel free to park and walk them over if you'd like, but please do not let your child walk unattended in the main parking lot at arrival.
Thanks to kindergarten aide Mrs. O’Driscoll for her quick action today when a student began choking on a piece of hot dog on Tuesday. Please find a time soon to teach your child the Universal Sign for Choking as it’s only universal if we all know it. We've asked teachers to share this as well. Also, here's a link to brush up on the Heimlich Maneuver if you need to.
We'll be celebrating School Resource Officer Appreciation Day and our own Office Phelps on Thursday, February 15th. Feel free to drop a note of appreciation to him at either Cole School or the Norwell Police Department.
We more than doubled the number of Magnificent Meerkats this week! These 50 students were nominated by staff and students with very specific reasons given in the nominations. These students personify Cole School's motto - Dream Big, Dare Greatly, and Shine Brightly, and they consistently show expected and positive behaviors. Way to go, Magnificent Meerkats!!!
We did clarify this week that we can not honor nominations that two friends complete for each other or for single acts of kindness. Nominations should come in for students that consistently showed expected behaviors day in and day out over the course of time.

Counselor's Corner
This week, students continued to learn and practice inclusiveness through Cole Connections. We will wrap up next week with third grade hosting our Community Meeting. Next week is also Random Acts of Kindness Week! You can find some great resources to to celebrate it here. New social-emotional skill building groups are also on their way. Teachers and students have been working on completing a screener, SAEBRS, which gives us data about the highest student needs in this area. Groups will be formed and parents contacted over the next week.
Specialists' Scoop
We continued our Gymnastics Unit this week. Kindergarteners,1st & 2nd graders worked on body control while traveling creatively (i.e. bear, crab, seal walk) on different body parts around the gym. Third graders focused on the stillness of balances (i.e. candlestick, warrior and bridge). Fourth and fifth graders performed with partners with mirroring, matching and partner balances using their skills of jumping, rolls and weight on hands.

HAVE USED OR UNWANTED MARKERS, PENS, WOODEN OR MECHANICAL PENCILS?
Last year the Norwell Recycling and Sustainability Committee successfully initiated a project to recycle crayons and continues to collect used or unwanted crayons. We are now adding markers, pens, and wooden and mechanical pencils to our collections for recycling. We are working in partnership with Staples, which has recently added them to their list of materials that can be recycled.
