Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools
State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.
Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.
Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.
Review and Update Emergency Information
If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.
All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.
We look forward to partnering with you to make 2021-22 a safe, fun and productive school year for all of our students and families.

SPORTS SCOREBOARD
Boys Hockey @ Shakopee Tuesday, Jan. 4
The Lightning Boys Hockey team traveled to Shakopee on Tuesday and held on for a 5-4 win in an important South Suburban Conference game. The Lightning controlled the first two periods en route to a 4-0 lead but saw the Sabers roar back in the third by scoring three unanswered goals.
The Lightning struck early with Charlie Ortman scoring the first of two goals just 2:30 into the first period. Assists went to Sam Gillis and Jordan Brothers. The boys continued to take it to the Sabers, knotting the first six shots on net and using an aggressive forecheck to draw a couple early penalties. Logan Opgrand scored the first of two goals during the second power play with assists going to Jordan Larkee and Zach Wooten. The Lightning dominated the entire period by winning puck races and maintaining an aggressive offensive zone cycle. For the period, Eastview outshot Shakopee 14-6.
A strong Lightning penalty kill started the second period and stifled any momentum the Sabers generated by drawing the penalty late in the first period. The Lightning defense of Gabe Tritschler, Ben Keefer, Nick Karam, and Opgrand were strong on the kill and momentum shifted back to the Lightning. Shortly after the penalty expired John Kisch tickled the twine on a three on two with assists going to Ortman and Brothers. Ortman scored his second goal off of a nice neutral zone play by Ryan Moline who had the lone assist. Eastview held a 4-0 lead and outshot Shakopee 12-4.
To kick off the third the Sabers scored the first of three unanswered goals in the first minute, followed by goals 15 seconds apart midway through the period. With the Eastview lead down to one and three minutes left, Opgrand took advantage of open ice and roofed a wrister on assists from Kisch and Wooten. The Sabers responded again just 20 seconds later and the Lightning had to hold on for the final two minutes and a 5-4 win.
The win raised the Lightning’s record to 7-2 and 5-1 in the South Suburban. Although the game probably should not have been close given the early effort, good teams can learn and grow from resilient wins. The boys have an opportunity to hit their stride with stiff tests coming from visiting Minnetonka on Thursday and South Suburban rival Rosemount on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. Superfans needed for the crosstown Rosemount showdown!
The Eastview Alpine Skiing Varsity team raced on Tuesday night, January 4th at Buck Hill.
The Boys Varsity team took 5th place with Noah Rollings (11) having one of the best runs of the night. Owen Shcultz (8) and Zack Kier (10) were also top contributors to the teams overall points.
The Girls Varsity team took 6th place with Megan Young (10) coming in 12th place overall. Katelyn McClue (12), Elsa Youngberg (11) and Ellen Huenisch (12) all contributed 30 points or more to the teams overall score.
The Junior Varsity team will race this Friday, January 7th at 4pm at Buck Hill.
JV SPORTS
1/6/22 – Eastview Boys JV Hockey sent to the brig by the JV Skippers from Minnetonka
The game started even for the first third of the first period, when the Skippers scored an even strength goal at 6:11 to take a 1-0 lead. The Skippers scored their 2nd even strength goal on a pretty snipe at 9:07. The flood gates really opened at the end of the period when Minnetonka scored two more goals just 12 seconds apart, both at even strength, at 15:06 and 15:18, both with just under a minute and a half to play. The period ended with Minnetonka leading 4-0 and outshooting the Lightning 12-6.
Minnetonka carried the play for most of the second period, with lightning goalie Kaden Goff #1 keeping Eastview in the game with solid goaltending. The Lightning scored the only goal of the period at 5:46, a nice goal from the slot to the right of the Skipper goalie by Billy Downs #23, with the assist from the sideboard coming from Gavin Churness #38. The second period ended with Minnetonka leading 4-1. The Lighting were outshot 11-3 during the period, with total shots on goal at 23-9 in favor of Minnetonka.
The Skippers continued to put the pressure on the Lightning in the third period, scoring their first goal of the period at even strength at 3:01, then finishing the scoring for the evening with a power play goal at the 10:40 mark. Minnetonka outshot the Lightning 12-4 in the last period, with total shots for the game of 35-13 in favor of the Skippers. The game ended 6-1 for Minnetonka. Eastview goalie Kaden Goff #1 was tested early and often and did his best to backstop the Lightning. The Lightning fall to 7-4-2 on the season and are back in action this Saturday January 8, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Rosemount.
9TH GRADE SPORTS
9TH GRADE WRESTLING: Hastings/Park of CG Duals 1-4-22
The EV Ninth Grade Grapplers concluded their dual meet season by competing against both Hastings and Park of Cottage Grove on January 4, coming away with a 1-1 record. Spencer Lee and Pierce Lewis (8th Graders) and Jack Bauer, Landon Odegard and Eli Zillhardt, paced the 9th graders with their six team points while Levi Ruyle won a 14-3 major decision for four team points and Aiden Enderlein won a nice 6-0 decision but is wasn’t quite enough as Hastings prevailed 39-37 in a very exciting dual match. Aiden Enderlein and Tommy Schmidt (8th Grader) each earned a pin fall and Spencer Lee (8th Grader) had a nice 9-3 win against an under-manned Park of CG squad to help win 57-27. Congratulations to the ninth grade Team for continuing to improve and closing out their dual meet season with a 2-2 record! The Ninth Grader’s next competition as a team is not until Saturday, January 15 where they will participate in the Mounds View JV Tournament.
