Principal's Message
Dear Valley View Parents and Families,
Our first month of school is completed. Last month we welcomed students back to Valley View for full-time in-person instruction for the first time in a year and a half. Students have also participated in clubs and after school sports. It was good for our staff, our students, and our families to have students back at school full-time.
Thankfully, we have also had a safe start to our school year. We have had very few students with COVID at Valley View. Please continue to help your students monitor their health and do not send them to school if they are not feeling well. You can use the “You Are Sick, Now What?” or “Return to School Flowchart” documents that are in this newsletter as well as posted to our website as guidance for return to school. Contact our main office if you have any questions.
As we begin the month of October, students will be entering a more normal pattern of work. Our staff has spent much of September teaching students academic habits and building relationships. While entering this new phase of more normal school, we will be assessing our students’ needs and responding to them. Teachers will be giving students classroom-based academic assessments, and we also have some State and District-wide assessments scheduled for October and early November.
Here are a few upcoming dates for those assessments:
· Healthy Youth Survey (October 13th) – Will be given in History classes. It is an assessment that is given every other year to assess trends and patterns of behavior over time. Information from the survey is used to guide policy and programs that serve youth. This assessment will be given to eighth graders this year.
· Panorama Survey (October 19th) – Will be given in Viking Period. This is an assessment of how students at Valley View feel about their competency in classes, their safety at school, how connected to school they feel, and what their general feelings about being a student at Valley View are. We will use this information to determine how to better support our students.
· Fall SBA (early November) – This assessment is a much shorter version of the assessment that students missed in the spring, (only one class period for math and one class period for language arts). More information will be coming out about this in future communications.
Thank you for your support as we continue progressing through the school year. We are so glad to have students back at school. Let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Brian Burdon

Sick?
If a student or staff member is not feeling well and has any symptoms of illness, even mild ones, please stay home. Symptoms could include cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of taste or smell. One symptom is enough to warrant staying home as a precaution. We know it can be frustrating to stay home with mild symptoms. Children get sniffles, a cough, or upset stomach from time to time, and this is usually not cause for alarm. But this pandemic is the time for extra caution, and all students and staff should stay home even if symptoms are mild. If a student or staff member with symptoms does go to school, or if they start having symptoms while they are at school, expect they will be isolated and sent home as soon as possible. This means an ill student would likely be asked to wait in a dedicated room where they are not near others until a parent/guardian arrives to take them home. Students who are ill or are symptomatic should be picked up within 30 minutes of parents/guardians being contacted.
Class A symptoms:
- Fever (defined as subjective or 100.4 F or higher)
- Cough
- Chills
- Loss of sense of taste and/or smell
- Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
or
Class B symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle or body aches
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea (defined as 2 or more loose stool in 24 hours)
Upon returning home
The information in this section only pertains to those individuals who are not a confirmed close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19:
- If the student or staff member is tested for COVID-19 (physician-, lab-, pharmacy- or clinic-confirmed test) and the results are negative, they may return to school once their symptoms have improved, and they’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours. Anyone with symptoms is encouraged to get tested.
- If a student or staff member has symptoms but is not tested for COVID-19, they must remain home according to the timelines below and at least 24 hours after fever is gone and symptoms have improved:
- 1 class A symptom of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 2 class B symptoms of any duration = 10-day quarantine
- 1 class B symptom lasting more than 24 hours = 10-day quarantine
- Those who have symptoms but have not tested for COVID-19 and are not close contacts of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, may obtain a medical professional’s note clearing them for return. The medical professional’s note must be based on the individual’s established medical history or must include an alternative lab-confirmed diagnosis.

Did you order Spirit Wear?
Thank you to families who ordered Spirit Wear – we love your school spirit! For families who requested their Spirit Wear orders be sent to the school, we regret that we are not able to do school delivery this year. These orders should be available for pick-up at the Streamline building at 1910 Bickford Ave Suite H, Snohomish. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes! To fix this problem for the future, Streamline will be removing the ‘deliver to school’ option. If you have questions about your order, please contact Streamline at 360-243-3949 or veronica@streamline-llc.net.
