Girls Basketball
Coach: Matt Carroll
Assistant coaches: Scott Merrill, Mark Wasson, Pete Williams
We knew going into the year that this season would be about rebuilding as we only returned two varsity players from the 2015-2016 season. This became even more evident when we lost our senior captain and standout Madison Pisut to a season-ending ACL injury in the 2nd quarter of our 2nd game. In addition to Madison, Kim Benge, a senior leader, has yet to play a game due to a knee injury. The great thing about sports is with injuries come opportunity, and a lot of girls have stepped up to the challenge. Although it hasn’t shown up on the scoreboard, many girls have gained a lot of valuable experience that will help us over the last month of the season and in the coming years. - Coach Matt Carroll.
Senior Noelle Woodman has taken on the challenge of being the senior leader on and off the court, including her 22 point performance against Hatboro Horsham early in the season. Brianna Hughes, a freshman phenom, has gained recognition among her teammates, coaches and opponents with her athleticism and effort. She showed everyone what she is capable of with her 11 points and 16 rebounds against Sacred Heart. Sophomore point guard Phoebe Longstreth has continued to fight through the adversity that comes with being a 1st year starter and running the team’s offense.
Off the court, our players and coaching staff have been fortunate enough to participate in great events such as the CHOP Parkway Run, Toys for Tots donation game, and a dodgeball tournament for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. - Coach Matt Carroll
Boys Basketball
Head Coach: Matt Heiland
Assistant Coaches: Sean Feeley & Dan Heiland
The team is currently 7-6 Overall and 3-4 in the SOL American Division. UM starts playing their seven league opponents for the 2nd time starting Tuesday night @ home vs. Hatboro-Horsham. Despite losing 3 of the last 4 games the team has played some very good competition very tough and the team is coming together for the home stretch of the season. The first district playoff points update came out Monday 1/16 and the Boys Team sits at 16th place, which would get them the last spot in the District I 5A playoffs. With 9 games still remaining a lot is possible and if they continue to play good basketball and win some close games they could still host a home playoff game.
Shane Stone leads the Bears in two major categories. He is the leading scorer at 11.0 Points Per Game and is also the leading rebounder with 8.69 RPG. Damian Washington is right behind him averaging 10.2 points per game. Damian also leads the team in three pointers made with 26, Ryan Coyle who had a very good game vs. state ranked Plymouth Whitemarsh is averaging 7.6 PPG and just under 4 assist per game.
The Boys Basketball Team would also like to congratulate Damian Washington on giving a verbal commitment to play basketball at Delaware Valley University under Head Coach Mark Seidenberg next season.
Wrestling
Head Coach: John DeFranco
JV/Assistant Coaches: Bill Marino, Nick Shute and Sam Newsham
The wrestling team is 2-0 in the SOL American Conference and 2-8 overall. Individually UM wrestlers are having great success with 10 of 12 Varsity athletes posting winning records so far this season. Team captain, Jason Amy (126) is currently 10-0 and ranked #4 in District One and Freshman Chris Walker (120) is 12-1. Although, forfeiting several weight classes has hurt the success at team dual tournaments, they have done quite well at Invitational Tournaments. At the New Hope-Solebury Invitational Tournament the Golden Bears outscored fourteen teams to earn the second place team trophy. Jason Amy (126) and Chris Walker (120) were tournament champions, Amanda Walker (113) placed second, Caitlyn Walker (106), John Richter (138) and Hunter Williams (160) placed third and Alex Bermudez placed forth. The team will be wrestling Hatboro-Horsham for the Border Cup on Monday, January 30, 2017. The match will showcase all levels of the community wrestling program. The Upper Moreland Wrestling Club will wrestle a few exhibition bouts against Hatboro-Horsham's Youth Club at 5:00 PM, followed by Upper Moreland Middle School vs. Keith Valley Middle School at 5:30 PM and the Border Cup Match at 7:00 PM. The wrestling team is also excited to host it's first Invitational Tournament on Saturday, February 11, 2017. Please come out and show your support. Go BEARS!
Swimming & Diving
Head Coach: Shelly Lawn
Assistant Coaches: Jess Healy, Bob Israel
Girls Swimming - Record 1-4. So far Olivia Pervall, Emily Sanceciz, Colleen Davis, and AnnaMaria Stylianou have turned in district times. This year the team has a strong freshman class they are really stepping up in any event we swim them in.
Boys Swimming - Record 0-5. So far automatic district times have been turned in by Jake Matthews and Zach Litvin. Moving up to AAA class has been a large challenge but all swimmers are stepping up to the plate and rising to the challenge.
Diving-The girls divers have placed 1st in both dual meets they have competed in so far this season. Colleen Rodriguez won vs. Lower Moreland, and Kaylee Hermann took first in our tri-meet with Upper Dublin and Springfield. Also, all four girl divers, the two previously mentioned, along with Emma Dunham, and Sarah Pickard, have qualified for the District Championships this year.

From the boys side ...
Will Morales finished 5th in the triple jump at the December 30th Association Meet earning a medal. At the January 14th Association Meet Immanuel Thomas finished 2nd earning himself a trip to the Annual Meet of Champions. Scotty Murphy finished 4th at the same meet (earning a medal) after tripping over the last hurdle and literally falling across the finish line. After a trip to the trainer Scotty ran in the finals to earn his 4th place medal. Gutsy performance by the senior that shows why he is one of the team captains. The guys are all improving and their times are dropping at the right time and the quartet of Thomas, Murphy, Ciaran Mullen and Connor Hurst are looking to qualify in the 4x400 in the up coming meets.
From the girls side ...
Senior Christina Kane has been battling ankle problems but even with limiting her practice schedule and taking time off to rest, she has seen her times in the sprints drop. Victoria Leister is on the verge of a break out performance in the jumps and will be looking for a personal record in the 400 soon. Despite limited jump work, she has maintained her distances from last outdoor season. Mary Thompson has run personal bests in the 800 and Mile this season and is poised to make a push at the top girls in the conference come Spring Track.
From the sprinters to the distance runners to the throwers, the kids are working hard, buying in to the program and seeing the results. "This is the hardest working and closest team I've had here since I started in 2010. I've had good teams and great individual runners in the past, but the way these kids have bought in to what we are asking them to do is awesome to see. Keith Parker-Washington and I have changed the way we've done things and the dividends are really starting to show. The rest of the indoor season is going to be something special, but as a coaching staff, we are looking towards really rolling come spring track. Can't wait!!" - Head Boys Coach Doug Smith
Bowling
The Boys' Varsity, led by Seniors Jon Searles and Vince Isabella, are in 2nd place in the American Conference, one point behind North Penn. Jon Searles is the 3rd highest average bowler in our conference. Jon Searles Vince Isabella, AJ Borell and Kyle Murphy are all performing well and are working towards qualify for regionals. The JV team continues to show improvement and their averages and high games show it. A highlight of the season so far has been the 1021 high game rolled by the team, taking 3 points from North Penn last week, and Jon's 759 series.
The UM Girls Varsity team has continued to improve and are seeing a lot of growth. Led by seniors Maddie Mull and Rebecca Miekley, the girls are competitive in most matches. Amanda Tardiff is in the top 8 in the conference and currently qualifies for regionals. One of the highlights for the girls has been the 4-0 win over Upper Dublin and Amanda's 212 high game.
The team looks forward to finishing the season strong and doing well at the SOL Championships on February 14th.
