TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 7
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
Our school conducted a severe weather drill this week. All students and staff participated in the drill. These drills are required by law at school and prepare our students and staff for real world situations. Unless your student is new to the school, they are familiar with these drills and how to respond. In addition, the staff is trained before, during, and after the school year to ensure they know the procedures and how to provide guidance and comfort to students. Our administrative staff is provided guidance by Orange County Public Schools, the Orlando Police Department, and Orlando Fire Department.
OSES has many layers of safety, some are visible (i.e. a camera system, our School Officer Henry) and others are not (i.e. School Safe Plans, Reporting Tools). Keeping our school safe is not cliché at Orlando Science Elementary, but a task that we implement each day.

Curriculum and Testing Updates
This week, our students took part in the schoolwide Drop Everything and Write (DEAW) activity. DEAW is a great opportunity for students to hone their writing skills and prepare for future writing assessments. All students receive a prompt along with source(s). We hold this activity four times per year, with the Grades 4-6 final session coinciding with the statewide BEST Writing assessment. It's a wonderful way to encourage and support our students' writing abilities.
Please remember to send back the Acknowledgment of Receipt for your student’s Quarter 1 Progress Report and FAST PM 1 Score Report. Contact Ms. Carter (Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.
THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Volden
In Ms. Volden's kindergarten class we have been learning about communities in reading. We read about different types of communities and how we can help our communities be better. In math, we have finished our topic about learning addition and subtraction to 10. We have been doing a lot of fun apple themed activities in reading, math, and science. On Friday, we will do an apple investigation answering questions using our observations and five senses like a real scientist! We will even have a yummy and healthy treat of fresh apple slices for snack. Next month we look forward to many fun fall activities too!
FIRST
This Week in Ms. Bayno’s FIRSTIES Class!
For Reading, we started the Module 3 Amazing Animals. For this module, we will learn that animal bodies and animal homes come in many different shapes and sizes.
This week, we learned that animals have different characteristics and how they use their bodies to survive. We read the book " Best Feet Forward" written by Ingo Arndt, this book talks about different feet, flippers, and claws of different animals and how animals use them to survive. This book helps us practice identifying and using text features to understand more what we read.
For our Writing, this week we tried applying what we have learned from writing when we write our personal narrative during Drop Everything and Write, we did our best, but we will do better next time.
For Math, we are now on Topic 3 Add with Facts to 20. This topic expands on what we have learned related to solving Addition problems. This week, we learned to use number lines, counter cubes, and counters to add and subtract numbers.
For Science, this week we did a gallery walk about the properties and state of matter. We answered questions about how an object can be observed and measured. We also started talking about movements of matter.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Firsties was able to make “Sugar Skulls”. This is from the feast Dia De Los Muertos which is celebrated by the people in Mexico and other Latin Countries. It’s a special day to honor and remember family members who have passed away. Each sugar skull represents a departed loved one and is usually placed on an altar — an ofrenda.
Reminders:
Please remind the kids to bring their Agenda and Take-Home Folders ALWAYS.
Cereal Book Report Project is due on October 3-6

Thank you so much for our class donation this week!
SECOND
Coy
In Ms. Coy's class we are learning about place value to the 1,000 place. The students created Place Value Robots to show their understanding of the multiple ways to write a number. Ask your students to explain standard form, expanded form, and word form.
In ELA, we are reading different stories that are in the genre of fantasy. We learned fantasy stories are made up events that could not really happen like talking animals. We are also starting to learn about the elements of poetry this week into next week.
Permission slips will be coming home for our field trip in November to see Junie B Jones. Our field trip has been added to School Pay so please look for that. Cost is $25.
THIRD
Gerstung
This week Ms. Gerstung's third grade class has been working really hard on our multiplication and division facts. We also started learning about the distributive and associative properties of multiplication. In reading this week we finished up module 2, all about poetry and using descriptive language in texts. Science has been all about the properties of matter. We were able to explore the various tools we use when measuring forms of matter, including a pan balance, graduated cylinders, and identifying temperature with thermometers.
FOURTH
Polejes
This past week in Ms. Polejes’ class, we have been learning about changes in matter. This includes both physical and chemical changes.
To better see what a physical change entails, we worked in our table groups to show how we could change paper and Play-Doh, by cutting, folding, ripping, and so on. This resulted in a change of matter in size and shape. We also discussed how water can have a change in state.
We are now experimenting with chemical change by observing what happens to steel wool when it is placed in water. Over the next couple of days, we will watch a chemical reaction as a new substance is formed!
FIFTH
Kaljulaid
This week in Language Arts 5th graders have been exploring elements of drama. To get a stronger feel and understanding of these elements they worked in groups to practice and perform "The Miracle of Spring". They worked to develop their script reading skills and bringing the roles to life.
SIXTH
Rego
Students practiced writing in cuneiform this week in Mr. Rego’s class, as well as they took notes on the Akkadian empire and learned about Sargon the Great.
They did a wonderful job on their Wonders of the World project!
In World Art, students learned about famous Hispanic artists like Picasso, Miro and Kahlo, and then they practiced creating art in their style.
SPECIALS
Coates- Visual Arts
This week in Art we learned about the history of Sugar Skulls and how they got their name as well as the history of some of the celebrations that take place during National Hispanic Heritage Week. Students colored sugar skull templates using bright colors. Kindergarten learned about the Elements of Art, Line and Color. Fourth grade is working on their Oil Pastel Resists and next week they will experiment with the resist process using watercolors and oil pastels. Even though September is coming to a close, it is still important that all of our Orcas remember to show respect to themselves and others.
Ready for a challenge? Try one of these!
Design an ORCATASTIC bumper sticker about respect. Include the word Respect, why you should use it and at least two words that describe it.
or
Make an ORCATASTIC campaign poster about respect. Make sure you include the word “Respect” and two reasons why someone would want to vote for having respect for all the ORCAS at our school (student, teachers, staff). You could use construction paper, felt pens, crayons, magazine cut-outs and templates.
or
Write a paragraph describing how the world would be different if more people showed respect toward one another.
or
Create a recipe for respect. What ingredients do you need?
I hope I continue to see commendations throughout the year for Orcas showing this important core value!
