Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori Community,
On Monday, our last wave of pre-school children will arrive, these are our returning 4-year-olds. You can bet the cafeteria will have a lot more small bodies making a lot more joyous noise! You will also find it very difficult to find parking. Please plan to use street parking, either Monroe, Adams or along 13th Street where it is legal. Plan to arrive early as you will find us at maximum congestion from now until May! New families, welcome to Shaw and our big happy chaos of arrival and dismissal. Please do your part to practice patience and be extra safety conscious as there are a lot of valuable, irreplaceable moving parts. Thank you!
Earlier this week, the Governing Board approved changes to the District’s COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan that are now in effect. Per updated guidance from the CDC that was released on August 11, the following changes have been made to the Mitigation Plan:
- Removal of requirement of staff and students to quarantine in the event of close contact to a positive COVID-19 cases
- Removed information about “Test-To-Stay” protocols
- Removal of recommendation to cohort students
- Changed recommendation to conduct screening testing to focus on high-risk activities during high COVID-19 Community Level, or in response to an outbreak
With these changes, the only time that a person must isolate away from school is in the event of that individual testing positive for COVID-19. If you would like more information on our COVID policies, you may visit: https://www.phxschools.org/covid
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
Anyone in the United States that is having a mental health crisis can now dial 988, 24/7, for support. 988 is not solely for suicide prevention. It is for anyone experiencing health related distress such as suicidal thoughts, mental health or substance abuse crisis or any other kind of emotional distress.
People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
Calls will be routed to the closest center based on the area code of the phone being used. When you call, you will be asked where you are calling from so that you can be transferred to a counselor near your current location. That way appropriate referrals can be provided.
You can also text 988, but those texts will go to a centralized system and not to local crisis counselors.
You can also text 988 and then hit 1 to be transferred to a crisis line for veterans.
You can still call 800-631-1314 or 800-273-8255 for suicide prevention, but, 988 may be easier to remember and will allow you to access services for any mental health crisis.

Message From Nurse Rose
Healthy Verify updated Covid-19 Mitigation Procedures for students. If a student is a close contact of a family/house member who tests positive for Covid 19, and they do not have symptoms of Covid-19, they may come to school. If student is a close contact and has any Covid-19 symptoms (new cough, shortness of breath, chills, sore throat, muscle pain, diarrhea or new loss of taste or smell) they must stay home. If they test negative or do not get tested, they may return to school once fever free x 24 hrs without the use of anti-pyretics and/or symptoms are improving. If they test positive, they will need to stay out for 5 days from start of symptoms. Student should stop by nurse’s office before going to class for evaluation.

Garden Update
Another week and a whole lot of happy and hard-working children. The 7th and 8th grades finished weeding their portion of the field garden. It was decided that we would not solarize the beds. We will sieve them instead and bring in some compost the following week. The week after that we will be seeding!
The students have developed a love/hate relationship with the Bermuda grass. It is hard not to respect the anatomy of Bermuda grass. It creates a tangled root system that look like a spiderweb. It is drought and heat tolerant and can grow in a variety of soils. It also comprises most of our sports fields, lawns and golf courses. Hopefully your children are belaboring you about destroying your lawn and replacing it with some sort of native landscaping. It sure would help our desert ecosystem and save you in utility expenses. Just a thought!
We are looking for flagstone donations for parent workday. I want to build a stone path around the east and south perimeter of the furrows. Last year, the parents excavated these areas and put down cloth and chips. It was a nice temporary border but now we must fortify it with stone and/or concrete. If we can not acquire enough flagstone then we will excavate everything and build some wooden squares for concrete steps.
We will have a parent workday on October 1st , 2022, from 8AM until 12PM. Stay tuned for more on that. I will make sure we post the sign-up link to See Shaw Shine and the Facebook page.
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
Mr. Moench
P.S. The class winner of the bottle cap drive will be rewarded with an ice cream and popsicle party in the spring!

PTA Brainstorming: Fun Run Funds
We have a big problem at the PTA; that is, we need ideas on how to spend the money from this year's Fun Run. Should we spend it on a Home Ec room or science equipment? Espresso machines for Barista classes (yes, please!) or a taco truck (kidding!). You tell us!
Whatever your ideas, share them below! The PTA will review the responses and put it on the agenda for the next PTA meeting.
