Expect Excellence In Everything
February 15, 2023
A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians! Thanks for a wonderful short week!
I would like to thank everyone that participated in our Denim and Diamonds Dance this past Friday! It was amazing to see our school community come together for a wonderful event. A special thank you to our PTA Board and PTA volunteers and our staff that made it happen. You are the absolute BEST! If you would like to assist in helping with other PTA events–please see the calendar-then let us know. It takes many hands to make the magic happen. Also, please let us know if you have any ideas or suggestions…or want to volunteer to help us continue to “Express and Expect Excellence” in Everything!
Please join PTA if you have not already done so. All students benefit from your participation.
Have a Wonderful and Safe Break!
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Brown

Personal Safety Lessons in March
We all share a common goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. Related to that goal, school counselors are required to present annual personal safety lessons designed to prevent sexual abuse. The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role playing and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from abuse and exploitation. A committee of professional school counselors reviewed the program and selected components that were developmentally appropriate for elementary students and developed lessons around those concepts.
The materials will be available for preview from February 21-28. During the months of March, our school counselors will offer the sexual abuse prevention and safety lessons to all K-5 students.
You can also learn more about the detailed lesson plans and research behind this program at www.childluresprevention.com. Please be aware that more information is provided on the website than is actually used in Gwinnett County. The plan for Gwinnett includes: the key concepts taught at all grade levels; each grade reviews what was learned in the previous grade(s) and then learns additional lures or tricks. A letter will also be sent home in your child’s Friday Folder with additional details.
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, we focus on a different character trait. The character trait for the month of February is Kindness. Kindness means treating others in the way that we would like to be treated and going the extra step to make someone feel special. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during February to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
College and Career Day
We haven't been able to host this event in years, but this year our College and Career Day is scheduled for March 31st. This day will give students the opportunity to learn about nearby colleges and careers from individuals that can speak first-hand about their daily experiences. No book can teach them that!
We would love for you to come to our College and Career Day! The actual event is 8:30am-10:30am. Please let us know if you would like to speak to our students. You can email Chavonne O’Rear at chavonne.orear@gcpsk12.org for more information or to volunteer.
Book Fair Time: February 27-March 3
We are excited to have the Scholastic Book Fair back in our school! The book fair will be a CASHLESS event this year. We are encouraging parents to create “eWallets” through Scholastic for their child to use when shopping at the fair. The “e-wallet” works like a gift card, with funds preloaded, so it is not necessary for students to have to handle cash.
Student “eWallets” can be set up any time prior to the start of the book fair! Click on the link below to get started!
Plan to bring your family to shop during the early release afternoons of March 1 and March 2. Parents are welcome to shop anytime during school hours! Credit and debit cards will be accepted from adult shoppers.
Every Monday throughout February, there will be a Who Am I? question posed in the Celebrating Black History eCLASS widget. Students will have until Friday of the week to submit their responses. Prize winners will be randomly selected, based on correct responses, and announced on the morning announcements every Monday. I hope you will encourage your child to participate!
Spotlight on Black History Month
Rosa's Bus: The Ride to Civil Rights by Jo S. Kittinger
The story of the bus--and the passengers who changed history. Like all buses in Montgomery, Alabama, in the 1950s, bus #2857 was segregated: white passengers sat in the front and black passengers sat in the back. Bus #2857 was an ordinary public bus until a woman named Rosa Parks, who had just put in a long day at work, refused to give up her seat. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a major event in the Civil Rights Movement.
February 1-28, 2023
It’s time for a new reading challenge! During the month of February, encourage your child to read and log at least 300 minutes!
Students will login to Beanstack using their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students are able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
Refer to the media center link of the school website for helpful resources to get your child started with Beanstack. Contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org if you have any questions about this digital reading program.
Join us on Facebook for more updates & upcoming PTA meeting information!
