BASH Sophomore Attends 2023 YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs in NC
"This trip has got to be one of the best experiences of my life. I got the chance to meet so many new friends, whom I intend on staying in close contact with. I also got to try so many new things, as well as hone in on my other skills." - Kailey Reinboth, BASH 10th Grader
The Experience in Kailey's Words via Email to Members of the BASD Faculty and Staff:
We all met up in Harrisburg Friday afternoon, then spent the night in Harrisonburg, Virginia, before finishing our drive to Blue Ridge YMCA. We broke down 10 different times, but other than that the drive was fine!
We got there Saturday afternoon, and engaged in pin trading with other states before going into meetings. I got to meet with the rest of the media team, and they were all such wonderful people. I spent the rest of the night out on the porch of Eureka Hall, working with my new friends, before going to my late night delegation meeting.
Over the next couple of days, I worked to help create the daily broadcast, which was shown to the entire conference during our nightly delegate assembly. I worked to host and create segments, and I got to anchor the first broadcast! I also created videos for social media, which can be found at @brjcona, and I even hosted an episode of CONA’s podcast, Our Voice Amplified!
During the conference, I got to make so many new friends from all across the country. I also grew closer with those in my delegation, and we truly have become a family. Several PA delegates won awards, and PA’s own Gabby Greene was chosen as a CONA Presiding Officer for next year!
In other news, I also got the chance to speak in the General Assembly, a proposal committee made up of a third of the entire conference. Media is given speaking and voting rights during GA and Plenary, another committee made up entirety of the delegates.
I was looking to speak, and researched and prepared a pro speech on increasing the number of emergency shelters for human trafficking victims. I received several compliments on my speaking, and I was really proud of myself. I linked the video below if you’d like to watch.
Overall, I had an incredible experience working at CONA. I learned so many valuable things during my time, and I intend to use them for the rest of my Youth and Government career.
Once again, I appreciate all of the support from everyone. It really helps to know that people have my back! It also is great to know that you all support a program that means the world to me, and I hope you continue to support YAG!
Thank you for everything!

BASH Teacher and Co Editors-in-Chief Attend Conference
Two BASH Journalism students joined Mrs. Trina Schaarschmidt, BASH English teacher and Cub advisor, at George Mason University this summer for the Washington Journalism and Media conference. Mrs. Schaarschmidt was on staff, and Emma Webster and John Loos, both BASH juniors, attended as correspondents. John and Emma have been selected as co-editors in chief for the Cub for the 2023-2024 school year and were nominated by Mrs. Schaarschmidt for WJMC.
The three spent the week with more than 280 students from around the world and numerous correspondents and Journalism professionals.
Mrs. Schaarschmidt had this to say about the experience, “Giving students real world opportunities is where authentic learning takes place! My students with the The Washington Journalism and Media Conference have been galavanting DC and had a chance to meet Savannah Behrmann, Senate Correspondent, National Journal; Randi Richardson, Reporter NBCnews.com and TODAY Digital; Brian Lamb, former CEO of CSPAN; Tom Jackman, Reporter, The Washington Post; Carmella Boykin, TikTok Team, The Washington Post; and Nisha Chittal, Managing Editor, VOX. Being part of these conversations allows me to launch our youth toward discovering and utilizing their voices, and I am thrilled to contribute to their journey. This year is EXTRA special since two of my own local Journalism editors are here with me!“
John Loos added the following: “I learned so much at the Washington Journalism and Media Conference. I heard journalists speak about working in the field. During newsroom simulation, we learned about Axios, a news website that publishes all its stories using smart brevity, a clear, concise, and fast way of organizing stories. I also learned about the importance of pitching a story, and having the 5 W's/an angle before pitching to an editor. This experience will definitely help the Cub in the upcoming school year, as I now witnessed professional journalists, a new way to structure stories, what a newsroom's like, and so much more! I plan to share my experience with others on the Cub, in hope they'll consider going. I can confidently say it made me a better writer, thinker, and listener. I'm excited to see the Cub drastically improve this upcoming school year!”
We look forward to sharing all of their great work in upcoming editions of this newsletter.
Congratulations to all of you on an incredible summer experience!

Our Facilities, Operations, and Grounds Crew Teams ROCK!
While many of us were enjoying summer vacation, our Facilities and Operations department was hard at work getting our buildings and grounds ready for the 2023-2024 school year.
It definitely paid off! Thanks to the entire team for everything you do
over the summer and throughout the year!

Mission to Kenya
Mr. Robert Schoener, Occupational Therapist at GES and MSE, spent part of his summer vacation with children in Africa while traveling with Cornerstone Church of Skippack.
Here are just a few of the highlights in Mr. Schoener's words:
We spent 4 days at Kaptagat children's home where our church sponsors the orphaned children living there through the organization Chariots for Hope based in Dresher, PA.
We ran a VBS that had 4 stations: Bible lesson, sports, snack and crafts (I was part of the craft team, surprise surprise).
We also spent time with just the staff who consider themselves the parents to these children - because they really are the only parental figures these kids will have.
After our time in Kaptagat we went on a safari and got to see God's creation up close and unfiltered.
We also made stops at a baby home and another children's home while traveling around Kenya.
Thank you for all you do for children here at BASD and around the world!

MSE Students Show Off Rubik's Skills for More Than 500 Opening Day Attendees
MSE 7th-graders Ben Mcdermott and Michael Wydrzynski kicked off our opening day activities for faculty and staff by accepting our challenge to solve MULTIPLE Rubik's Cubes, follow a pattern, and design a second puzzle of a bear paw in front of more than 500 adults. Not only did they display grace under pressure. They made it look "easy, peasy!"
With a little help from Mrs. Kim Mento, MSE Librarian, and approximately 130 Rubik's Cubes (funded through grants for the MSE library), the two had less than 15 minutes to complete the work captured below. Later in the program, the two joined approximately ten staff members to complete yet another puzzle for the audience.
Ben is a self-described "problem-solver" who loves puzzles of all kinds. He enjoys "challenging his brain." Michael's love of cube-solving began last year when he met Mrs. Mento. Now she tosses a cube his way everyday when he enters the library. Michael and Ben worked together on multiple Rubik's projects throughout their 6th-grade year and look forward to the new challenges ahead.
Thanks for sharing your talents with all of us!
