Principal's Report
- As part of our Title 1 requirements, below are our school-wide goals:
L&C Title 1 Review Meeting (Spring 2022) & Title 1 Family Mailing - Goal 1: At the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year, the Lewis and Clark Lions will have 65% of students in grades 2-5 will attain a Student Growth Percentage of 50 by 5/31/23 as measured by the fall to spring STAR Reading Assessment.
- Goal 2: At the conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year, the Lewis and Clark Lions will have 75% of students in grades 1-5 will attain proficiency (41 PR or above) by the spring STAR Math Assessments.
- Thank you so much for taking time to visit with your student's teacher during our fall conferences. We appreciate these conversations with each of you to ensure we're all on the same page in your child's educational journey. Also, thank you to the families and PTO for contributing to feeding our teachers on these late nights!
- School-wide reading blocks have been implemented to allow for sharing of students and for the flooding in of resources and staff. These groups are targeted to student needs and part of our tier 1 instruction. If you hear your child talk about their reading group, probe and use it as a great talking point about their educational experiences.
- We are also piloting a reading intervention called “Littera Tutoring”. Selected students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will participate in an online tutoring program with a live tutor working through topics targeted to their needs. We look forward to sharing our winter data with you!
- Class Shout Outs
- Each class has a box in their classroom for other students to offer a shout out to their peers. Each week, we draw a shout out and reward students for showing gratitude towards each other.
- Students of the Month
- Each month, a student from each grade-level is chosen by teachers and school staff to be the Student of the Month. Students of the month eat lunch with Mr. Hoheisel, get their picture posted around school, and earn a Lion keychain to thank them for being respectful, responsible, and safe.
L&C Advisory Council
- We’re looking for families, community members, students, and champions of L&C to help be the pulse of our school. The hope is that as a team, we'd meet two times this year to survey the needs within our school community and neighborhood. Please fill out this form if interested or forward it to someone who might be interested. https://forms.gle/MPJFqUT3dzLruFFA8
If there is anything I can help with, please reach out to the office or email me at lhoheisel160@mygfschools.org. Take care, and we'll see you soon!
Mr. Hoheisel

This mailing includes many pieces of information that may be of interest to our families. This information was shared at our October PTO meeting.
Attendance Policies
- STAY IN SCHOOL Program - There is a positive correlation between regular attendance and academic success. The Stay in School Program is a collaborative effort of community agencies with the purpose of reducing excessive school absence and tardiness. This is a joint venture between school, family, and community, which offers assistance to parents and students at an early intervention point in order to reduce time away from the classroom.
- ATTENDANCE POLICY - As per North Dakota state law, all students enrolled in the Grand Forks Public Schools are expected to be in school on time and ready to learn each day. To accomplish this, a child needs proper nourishment, sleep, and support from the home. Regular attendance patterns develop a positive daily routine that supports learning and requires the members of the school community, including parents, students, teachers, and support staff.
- North Dakota State guidelines state: “Students shall miss no more than 20 days per year.”
- Parents are expected to call the school attendance line
- Child will not be in attendance.
- Medically excused absences do not count against a student's twenty days IF a note is provided by a doctor, dentist, orthodontist, optometrist, therapist, etc.
RECORDING ATTENDANCE
The following guidelines are used to record attendance if school is in session for a full day.
- Whole day absent – If a student is absent four (4) or more hours, they are reported absent for one (1) school day.
- Half day absent – If a student is absent two (2) or three (3) hours, they are reported absent for one-half (1/2) school day.The following guidelines are used to record attendance if school is dismissed at 11:20am.
- Whole day absent – If a student is absent three (3) or more hours, they are reported absent for one (1) school day.
- Half day absent – If a student is absent two (2) or less hours, they are reported absent for one- half (1/2) school day.
