Paul Banks Elementary
October Newsletter
✏️ A Note From Our Principal
Dear Paul Banks Families,
As the leaves change colors and drop from tree limbs, I know that the calendar has turned to October. It is hard to believe that the first quarter of school is on the horizon, possibly because our days at Paul Banks have been action packed with kids learning and having fun. On a daily basis, I am impressed in some way, whether it is a student sharing a piece of writing they have created, or a beginning reader reading aloud to me, or a class discussion, or a student led read aloud, or an outdoor math lesson, or an art project finished, or a friendship formed.
Reflecting on the last month, a number of highlights emerge. Our PTA sponsored BBQ celebrating our Outdoor Classroom was an outstanding success. Our first grade went on a field trip the post office and police station as a culmination of their study of community. Our second grade explored the Calvin and Coyle Trail. Kindergarten families worked with teachers to build cardboard violins, an annual rite of passage for Paul Banks Preludes. Our pre-schoolers got to meet K-9 Officer Lavi and hear stories read by troopers. It was an awesome month!
Our teachers and staff do a terrific job supporting each of our students, as do each of you. Educating your children is a partnership, and we so appreciate what you are doing to prepare them to engage in their learning every day. Additionally, many of you have begun volunteering in classrooms or on field trips. I love seeing parents and grandparents in our building, and we welcome more volunteers. You can see the process via our school district website; additionally, if you are interested in substituting, consider doing so (apply here).
Reading is such a profound skill to learn. As I study how students learn to read, I am reminded of just how complex it is. It takes time and countless opportunities to practice. I am excited to share a family created reading list that you can refer to (see list below). These are titles that families and teachers have suggested. I can’t emphasize enough how important reading for 15-20 minutes each night can be. Please help to add to our reading list by emailing me favorite titles you have read or just let me know when you stop by. As a former English teacher, I love talking books!
As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or feedback. You can also offer input via this short three question survey if you haven’t already done so. Help us to make this year the best for your kids.
Sincerely,
Sean Campbell
