Research Tips
Know your way around shortcuts!
The best thing since sliced bread!
Take a screenshot - Windows + Shift + S
Once you have pressed these buttons, put your cursor at to the top left corner, click and drag diagonally to highlight what you want to take a screenshot of.
Switch between tabs - Alt + Tab
Hold down the Alt key and press the Tab key once. Keep pressing Tab to move between the options. Once you release both the Tab and the Alt key, whatever tab that was selected, will show up on your screen.
Click and drag to divide your display screen
To do this:
1 Click and drag an opened tab / screen to the right / left side of your screen. A shaded square will appear that will be half of your screen.
2 When you release the click (on the mouse), the tab will adjust to fill this shaded square.
3 You can then choose what your second half of the screen will be from the options displayed.
Asterisk wildcard
When you use an asterisk (*) in a search term in Google, it becomes a placeholder for any word that might fit.
For example, "Old * had * farm"
Google will do three things:
1 Look for a phrase that has five words in this order (because of the quotation marks)
2 Look for all phrases that have old, had, farm, and then all suitable word options for the * (that exist).
3 Return results that are the most common / popular. For example, 'Old MacDonald had a farm".
Filetype searching
Searching for a particular filetype can be useful.
For example, journal articles, scanned chapters of a book or a report / thesis may be published and uploaded online as a PDF document.
To find these, all you need to do is:
[Search term here] filetype:pdf OR [Search term here] .pdf
Note: You can also search for PowerPoint documents (PPT / PPTX), Word documents (doc/docx), and many others.
Hyphen to exclude words
For example, Google generally can pick up your location so if you did a search for 'opera house' it will likely return results regarding the Sydney Opera House. However, if we perform this search:
"opera house" -Sydney
It will do its best to remove results that have the word Sydney in the website. Unfortunately, it is not yet effective with ads, images and places which often appear on the first page of your search. All you need to do is scroll down to the bottom to where website results begin.

Referencing Tips
Look out for the word or icon - 'Cite'
Often in databases, there is the option (when you click on an article / resource) the word / icon of 'cite' exists either at the top or on the right-hand side. Click on the word / icon and choose APA. Here will be a relatively perfect APA end-text reference that you can include in your notes!
Referencing support materials are here...
Alternatively, you are welcome to email the Library (Library@ahs.qld.edu.au) or visit Library staff at the front counters on Level 1 and 2.
Also, one of the best kept secrets for referencing help is the APA Style Blog (APA Style Blog).
