Big Spring High School News

Students from the Big Spring High School were extremely busy and involved throughout their summer break. Prior to the school year, the incoming freshman had the opportunity to attend Dawg Day. Dawg Day is a day dedicated to touring and learning the school. We had 82% of the class that participated; that is the most students in attendance from the past 5 years since Dawg Day was established.

A club at our school, Student Council, hosted their annual "kick off" event. However, this year they "revamped" it. Along with the dance portion, they added a video game competition, karaoke, and tasty treats. It was a fun evening for everyone that came.

The Bulldog Band Brawl is on September 23, 2017 at the Bulldog Stadium. The Brawl is a Cavalcade of Bands sanctioned show, and will feature many local bands. The evening kicks off at 6:15 PM with our High School Cantabile singing the National Anthem, followed by the Middle School Band performing at 6:30. We then welcome several local bands, including Camp Hill, East Pennsboro, Northern York, Francis Scott Key, and South Western. The night finishes with our Marching Bulldogs and the awards ceremony which takes place at 8:45.

Tickets for the brawl are $8 for adults and $6 for students/senior citizens. The ticket booth opens at 4:30 PM and the gates will open at 5 PM. The Band Boosters will have concessions available all evening, as well as several other items to purchase, including candy grams and other gifts for members of the band. Programs are also available that evening for $5. We look forward to seeing many of you this Saturday at the Brawl!

On September 27, 2017, Big Spring High School will be hosting Junior Achievement's STEM Summit. The entire 9th grade class will be involved with experiments, competitions, and career panels to expose students in the field of science, technology, engineering, and math. September 27, 2017, will be a Senior Parent Survival Night. This night is led by one of the high school counselors, Ms. Sherri Mains. This night is to help prepare parents of senior students for what they are going to experience in the near future with college.

Big Spring High School is partnering with a school in Winchester, Virginia to sponsor Cypress Springs High School in Texas with relief following the devastation from Hurricane Harvey. This school is a work environment for around 300 faculty and a school environment for over 3000 students. Our goal is to help them get back on their feet. Two clubs in our school, Student Council and Dawg Pound, are excited to begin the planning process of what we can do to help. Ideas already being considered are a T-shirt sale coordinated by Dawg Pound and Student Council has started with collection drives of hygiene items, school supplies, non-perishable food, and monetary donations to purchase gift cards. All in all, this is a great way for students to help others from around the country. Sponsoring the school in Texas will not be a one time thing - with not knowing the extent of the damages in the school, Big Spring could be helping Cypress Springs all year!

During the summer of 2019, students from the Big Spring High School have the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and then Australia. The trip is being led by staff members. They will begin their adventure in Honolulu, Hawaii and then continue on to multiple locations in Australia. An informational meeting about the trip was on September 7, 2017.

On September 8, 2017, the home-opener football game against Biglerville was held. The football team performed well with a final score of 63-3. Before the game, the student section, marching band, and cheerleaders lined the sides of the large bulldog inflatable and cheered as the team ran through. The Student Section had an America themed cheer section meaning everyone wore red, white, and blue.

Adam Nobile, the band director, was an Emmy Music Educator Nominee. Sarabeth Fulton, agriculture teacher, received the Agri-Science Teacher of the Year Award. Wendy Hankes, math teacher, received the Shippensburg University Study Council Outstanding Teacher Award.

Every year, parents in the Big Spring community can nominate their children that are between ages 3 and 5. Voting on the crown bearer and flower girl can take place on:

-Friday, September 15th - Football Game in Big Spring Stadium (7:00 pm)
-Saturday, September 16th - Cross Country Ben Bloser Tournament (10:00 am - 12:00 pm)
-Friday, September 22nd - Football Game in Big Spring Stadium (7:00 pm)
-Saturday, September 23rd - Volleyball Game in Big Spring High School Gym (5:00 pm).

All proceeds from the voting will go to Paw Packs. Winners will be notified on September 28,2017 and must be able to attend the game and dance.

This year's Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The Homecoming Court has already been announced:

Seniors: Ethan Lee and Megan Emlet, Blake Barrick and Mackenzie Herman, Nicholas Black and Rachel Schmidt, Ethan Rhoads and Megan Stambaugh, Jackson Penner and Emily Webber, and Joey Yaukey and Faith Whitesel.

At the Homecoming football game, October 13, 2017, will be the announcing of the 2017 Homecoming King and Queen.

On October 5, 2017 will be the annual FFA Picnic/ Ag Olympics. The Ag Olympics will run from 4-6pm that day and the picnic will go from 6-8pm.

This year, from October 24, 2017- October 28, 2017, the FFA will be heading to Indiana for the FFA National Convention. We will be providing updates on all the events and activities our students participated in at the Convention. This is always a great and rewarding trip for our FFA members.

Senior, Ashlynn Gipe, is Big Spring High School's marketing intern this semester. As part of her experience, she is responsible for communicating out the many great things happening in our school and community. Her future plans include attending college for Business Administration. She is a member of our school Dance Team, Student Council, and Club Care. Ashlynn is interested in partnering with community members to "tell the story of Big Spring High School".
