Principals' Greeting
Hiteon Community,
With two holidays to celebrate during the month of November, it has been nice having the students in school for an entire week this week. We are in awe of how much your children have learned already this year and look forward to supporting their continued growth. We are frequently asked by parents if there is anything a parent can do to support their children’s learning at school. After many years in education, our answers are the same. Reading to your child or with your child can make a huge difference in your child’s vocabulary, knowledge, and ability to read. The other advice we share with parents is to ensure their children attend school. Having good attendance has proven to be a key indicator of a student’s success well beyond elementary school. We are here to help you if you need books to read at home or if you need support in improving your child’s attendance.
Additionally, if you need any other kind of support, we have a strong team to help you! Do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or our Counselor, Library Media Assistant, Student Success Coach, Social Worker or Academic Coach if you have questions or need support. Their email addresses are below:
Counselor: stephanie_godfrey@beaverton.k12.or.us
Library Media Assistant: mary_sadlouskos@beaverton.k12.or.us
Student Success Coach:jennifer_schmidt@beaverton.k12.or.us
Social Worker: tim_ribner@beaverton.k12.or.us
Academic Coach: sivhong_hanson@beaverton.k12.or.us
We are wishing you a great December!
Best Regards,
Janet Maza, Principal

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:45 – Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
According to BSD policy absences that are not medical in nature, such as vacations, will be marked as unexcused absence.
REMINDERS:
Tardy: School begins promptly at 8:00am. Students that are not seated at their desk at 8:00am are considered tardy. Unless they are in the cafeteria having breakfast. Unfortunately, this means that students that are in vehicles in the parking lot are still considered late if they enter the building at 8:01am.
Early Arrival: For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school before 7:45am there is no adult supervision prior to 7:45.
Dismissal: Again, for student safety, all students must be picked up from school at dismissal time 2:35pm. There is no supervision after 2:35. Unless the student is involved in a supervised after-school activity. Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35pm must have parent supervision.

CELL PHONE & SMART WATCH USE IN SCHOOL
Hiteon community, please help us ensure that students with their cell phones and smart watches at Hiteon follow the expectations outlined below.
Many students, especially in our older grades, have their cell phones or smart watches with them. They often use it before or after school to communicate with their families. This is understandable and acceptable. However, we need to ensure students are not using their smart watches, cell phones or calling family during school hours. It is important if a student is not feeling well or needs something brought to school that, those calls go through the main school office.
Cell phones/smart watches may be used on school grounds before school and after school.
During the instructional day, cell phones/smart watches must remain out of sight and in silent mode.
If students need to place an emergency phone call during the school day, they should request to go to the main office to use an office phone.
Thank you all for your assistance in reminding your children about only using their cell phones or smart watches before or after school.

Parking Lot Safety
The start of the school year has been great! It is that time of year when we need to address the car pick-up and drop-off expectations at Hiteon.
We are beginning to see unsafe behaviors at the car drop-off and pick-up at the front entrance. We have parents exiting their vehicles while in the car drop-off line. Students need to exit their cars on the passenger side only. When the driver gets out to help the student, it backs up the car line. We are witnessing other drivers become impatient and drive around the car and people that have exited their car. This is very unsafe with other cars passing close by on the left-hand side of the parked car. We do not want anyone to accidentally get hit due to these behaviors.
We ask that all students exit and enter their vehicle from the curb side (passenger side) only. Drivers, please do not leave your vehicle during drop off and pick up times. If your child requires you to exit your vehicle for drop off, you need to park in the parking lot and walk them to the front of the building. If you need to exit your vehicle during a pick-up time, we ask you to park your car and pick your child up in the back of the building (playground).
We must keep our parking lot safe for everyone, and we appreciate your cooperation.

Is your child too sick for school
We would like to remind parents about our guidelines for determining whether or not a student should come to school if they're ill. Please remember to visit our COVID-19 Protocols Information and Too Sick for School webpage for information about when to keep kids home from school.
If a student becomes ill during the school day, the student must go to the school's health room to be evaluated and then signed out by a parent/guardian. Students should not use their personal devices to communicate illness with parents directly. Please remind your students to inform their teacher and to visit the health room.

HITEON PTC CORNER
Hiteon School Dirctory
2022 - 2023 Hiteon Elementary School Directory
The Hiteon PTC will be creating a Hiteon Elementary School directory that will include student name(s) and grade level, parent or guardian names, email addresses, and phone numbers. This is a great way to connect with others in the Hiteon community (organizing play dates, birthdays, carpool, etc.).
The information you have on file with the school will be included in the 2022-2023 Hiteon Elementary School Directory. Once completed, the directory will be sent to you through ParentSquare in December. For families that do not have a ParentSquare account, please email INFO@hiteonptc.org to request that the directory be emailed to you. This directory will be published online and should not be used for public distribution.

La información que usted tiene en el archivo de la escuela se incluirá en el Directorio de la Escuela Primaria Hiteon 2022-2023. Una vez completado, el directorio le será enviado a través de ParentSquare en diciembre. Winter Walk and Bike Preparation
Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside all season! Time spent being active outside can boost mood and mental health and keep kids focused on learning better. With some simple preparation, your children can still be active and stay safe and warm during our winter months.
- Wear a raincoat or poncho, and/or carry an umbrella.
- Carry a plastic bag to store wet gear during the day.
- Wear gloves and waterproof shoes. Carry (or store at school) extra shoes and socks to change into.
- Find an under-cover area to park your bike if possible. If not, bring a plastic bag to cover the seat. We also have bike seat covers if any parent groups would like to provide some at the school for children riding bikes this winter.
- Wear reflective gear and/or bright colors and use a light on your bicycle.
- Only walk or bike in the rain if you’re comfortable, as roads are slick and visibility may be reduced. Always remember to stop at the curb or edge of the street, look in all directions before crossing and keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When we have inclement weather, school schedules could be affected. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the district website, ParentSquare and social media by 5:30 a.m. The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability of parents and students to drive safely, and the ability of students to walk safely. Decisions are made for the entire District. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.
For the latest inclement weather information:
● Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations.
● The BSD Public Safety webpage has information about inclement weather procedures and
snow routes. Log on and click “Inclement Weather Information.”
● Follow us on:
o Twitter @BeavertonSD
o Facebook @BeavertonSchoolDistrict
o Instagram @beavertonsd
● Tune into media outlets for updates.
