Julie Trisel: High School Science Teacher
The new science teacher at Corbett High School was raised in Portland and has lived in Oregon her entire life. Julie Trisel is the only child of parents who raised her on the west side of Portland. Julie's now retired father worked for Standard Insurance and her mom worked for First Tech Credit Union. As a child, Julie enjoyed both dance and gymnastics and was self-taught with the guitar. Her fondest memories are spending time with her maternal grandparents in Ariel, Washington. During the summers and many holidays, she would spend time in the great outdoors in the little community that housed all of the Ariel Dam employees. Her grandfather worked at the Ariel Dam and both grandparents taught her all about nature, the great outdoors and many life lessons. Julie spent many hours with her grandmother as there were not any children her age in the community. This is where Julie became fascinated with the possibility of one day becoming a science teacher.
During her junior year in high school, Julie was given an amazing opportunity by her biology teacher, Mr. Robert Clarno. He connected Julie with a grad student at Portland State University that led to her earning first place her senior year in the microbiology category at the Oregon State Science and Engineering Expo! This was another turning point for Julie, further cementing her interest in science. Julie graduated from Sunset High School in 2000 and went to work for Meier and Frank in downtown Portland. She later moved to Nordstrom, working in the cosmetics department. Julie had always wanted to attend college and in 2006, decided to make it her reality. While still working, she started at Portland Community College. She later transferred to Portland State University and graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Along the way, she also took numerous classes focused on education and worked in Ballhorn Science Lab, publishing three journal articles as a co-author. Once she completed her undergraduate degree, Julie went on to attend Concordia University, graduating with her Master's degree in Secondary Education. The entire time Julie was in graduate school, she continued to work full-time at Nordstrom as a manager! After graduation, Julie was hired at Gresham High School in 2014 as a science teacher. Corbett's own Kathy Childress was a mentor for several years and was later the one that let Julie know there was an opening at Corbett High School. Julie was hired at Corbett in August 2022.
Julie is really enjoying her first year in Corbett for several reasons. Because of her summers in rural Ariel, she has a great appreciation for Corbett being a small rural community. She also appreciates getting to know the students and staff on a more personal level due to the small size of the school. Her hope is to encourage and inspire the students to engage as they learn more about science. Julie is able to bring her son who is in kindergarten to Corbett with her and that is a real bonus! She and her husband live in SE Portland with their son and they enjoy creating and playing music in the evenings and on weekends. They also love visiting the Oregon Coast to relax and have fun.

Ramen, Boba, and the Keller: The C.M.S. Book Club Hits Portland!
On April 16, the middle school book club, Books And Donuts (also known as the B.A.D. Readers), traveled into Portland to attend an author talk at the Keller Auditorium.
For our fourth selection of the year, we chose the Multnomah County Library and Literary Arts 2023 ‘Everybody Reads’ book, A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. The students and staff really enjoyed reading this one, and we were able to get tickets to the author talk. The auditorium was packed with older readers and students from many area high schools; our middle schoolers were probably the youngest readers there. Wow! It was interesting to hear Ozeki talk about building the book’s characters, her constantly changing relationship with them, and her experience writing the many versions of the story before it was finally completed and published.
In keeping with the book’s themes of Japanese identity and culture, we went out for a ramen dinner before the reading. We also walked to the Portland State University campus to hit up a boba tea spot. It was so delicious that there’s now a contingent of middle schoolers clamoring to change the group’s name to Books And Boba…
Other books that we’ve read this year are Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve, West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge, and A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. We’re currently narrowing down our next novel for the year.
Happy reading, everybody!

Graduation Date Change to May 31, 2023
It came to our attention that our current graduation date of May 25th represents a hardship for our student-athletes. In setting the calendar for 2022-2023 last spring, I did not realize that the move from the 4A to 3A division would create a problem for our graduation date. Luckily, we have a couple of months to adjust. I realize that this will possibly create a hardship for families with friends and family coming from out of town, but in making this difficult decision I am putting our graduating seniors first. I don’t want to put them in the position of deciding if they should attend their own graduation ceremony or participate in their school sport.
The Corbett High School Graduation for the class of 2023 will take place on Wednesday, May 31st. The parade will begin at 7:00 pm, and the ceremony will begin at 8:00 pm, in the Jeff Lucas Memorial stadium.
There will be more specific information about the graduation ceremony coming in April, but please know that seating in the actual stadium will be limited, and the surrounding grassy areas and hillside will be available on a bring-your-own-lawnchair basis, (similar to a football or soccer game).
Seniors last day of school will still be on May 22nd, and all previously planned events are on track as scheduled. Josten’s will be providing an insert for graduation announcements with the correct date. CHAMPS has re-scheduled the All-Night Party to May 31st. We are looking forward to celebrating the hard work that these students have accomplished!

MCSO Community Patrol- Meet the Team!
MCSO Community Patrol, formally known as Citizen Patrol program, began in 2010 with the main purpose of deterring vehicle break-ins in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. MCSO Community Patrol is based out of Corbett, Oregon and also has a contingent of volunteers within the City of Fairview. This band of volunteers are trained citizen-volunteers that act as extra "eyes and ears" for local deputies. The volunteers patrol with a partner to help reduce crime; particularly vehicle break-ins of Gorge area parking lots like Multnomah Falls, along with various parks within the city of Fairview. They also patrol the Corbett Schools to keep our kids safe. They assist at numerous community events and are trained to assist police and fire personnel in the event of a disaster or other large-scale emergency. We would like to take a moment to honor them tonight for their service to Corbett and surrounding communities.
Rick Ashford has served twelve years with citizen patrol. Rick is a Navy Veteran, serving in the US Navy from 1967 to 1973. In his free time, he likes to hunt, fish, and ride motorcycles.
