October 2023 Newsletter
Message from Mrs. Langford, Collier Principal
October is here and we have made it through the First Quarter! Time has flown by! We are so proud of our students and the effort they show each day! Students have spent much of the first quarter learning school routines and building lasting relationships in class. We have worked together to create school projects, learned about how the government works in language arts, and are practicing our math skills!
Thank you to all the families that have attended our events this quarter! Your participation helps build a the strong Collier Community that we cherish! We look forward to more events coming in the next quarter to continue our strong community!
Grading Day and Fall Break are here October 6th – 13th! Whatever you choose to do over the break we hope that you have time to read, enjoy the outdoors, and relax! Enjoy your time together and we can’t wait to hear all about it!
We love family and community volunteers! If you have time and a talent that you would like to share with us! From reading with students, practicing math facts, or helping shelve books in the library, please stop by the office for information on how to become a Collier Volunteer!

We want to extend a HUGE Than you to The Friends of the Kirk Bear Canyon Library and Hughes Federal Credit Union for their donation and support of Growing with STEAM. We held our first quarter school-wide STEAM project on Friday, September 15th. Classes were tasked with working together to create a balloon scuplture using engineering and art! Guests from Frends of the Kirk Bear Canyon Library and Hughes Federal Credit Union attended and our community was able to thank them for their generosity. You will know items that were donated by the sticker you see to the right! We will continue to share all the amazing things that we can do with their support throughout the year! See below for some photos!

Collier Garden!
Our Collier Garden is growing!! Our preschool, Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, and 4th Grade classes have planted beans, tomatoes, broccoli, califlower, carrots, kale, romaine lettuce, and radishes! We cannot wait to watch them grow! Stop by and check it out, located on the playground by the cafeteria!
Thank you, Collier Families!
Collier Community! You are SO thoughtful!! Thank you so much for your generous donations to our Food and Hygiene Drive!! Your generosity blessed so many people!! In total our school collected 558 items for the East Tucson Food Pantry! This Food Pantry helps over 200 families each week, and they were very thankful for our support!
OMA Gold
We continue to be very busy with the OMA Program!
All students continue to tie math to music or movement and English Language Arts. Kindergarten has been focused on storywriting; 1st grade is exploring many different ways to express addition equations; 2nd grade is exploring number sense by ‘reading’ large numbers in place value; 3rd grade is creating 64 count musical summaries of a book; 4th grade is using movement to explore math word problems, and 5th is adding choreography to their class song.
Last month the entire school worked with an artist from the Museum of Contemporary art to learn about an artist inspired by music. They used watercolor to express their feelings on two pieces of music she presented. Some of our student artists’ work is featured in the main hallway. Please take a look at our Featured Artists boards! In addition, each class has a print of a famous work of music-inspired art in their room for a month.
On October 17, artists from Arizona Opera will be here to perform Beauty and the Beast for our students. We will also have a special guest on October 26th to announce a super secret, super special school project! Stay tuned for our big announcement.
Don’t forget to ask your students what they are learning about in OMA!
