Message from Mrs. Harp
Panther families,
As your children embark on their educational journey, it is vital to recognize the profound significance of good school attendance. Regularly attending school not only lays the foundation for academic success but also fosters essential life skills and character development. When children attend school consistently, they engage in valuable interactions with their teachers and peers, enhancing their social skills and emotional intelligence. Additionally, consistent attendance helps students grasp concepts more effectively, maintain continuity in their learning, and build a strong academic profile. Moreover, by attending school regularly, children develop a sense of responsibility, discipline, and punctuality, all of which are indispensable attributes for success in both academic and professional settings. As parents, your encouragement and support in ensuring consistent attendance will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter and more promising future for your children. Together, let us prioritize the importance of good school attendance to nurture well-rounded individuals ready to face the challenges of the world.
Of course we understand there are times that you must remove your student from school for an extended amount of time. I wanted to make sure to provide information about the difference between an independent study and missed work being provided by the teacher.
Independent Study is when a student will be missing between 5 and 14 days of school. This may happen all at once, or over 2 events (ex: 5 days one time and 7 another). We require two weeks notice in order to provide the work and the contract. You will meet with the teacher to go over and sign the contract which states the rights and expectations of the student and parent. The teacher will provide work in the same amount as the classroom time the student will be missing. Kindergarten will be assigned 4 hours daily, 1-3 will be assigned 5.25 hours daily, and 4-6 will be assigned 5.5 hours daily. So, if the class will be doing 90 minutes of math each day the student is gone, the teacher will assign 90 minutes of math daily to be done independently while away from school. All subject areas will be assigned, and must be recorded as completed. The work must be completed in entirety and returned the day the student returns from the independent study. If the work is not completed, or is not returned on time, this will result in the student being marked unexcused absent, which will result in a truancy.
If you know your student is going to be gone and will miss 1-4 days, we cannot provide an independent study. However, with advanced notice, you may request the work your student will miss in order to maintain academic progress. The teacher has the option to grant or deny the request. The student will be marked unexcused absent, and may become truant in the event of 3 or more unexcused absences. You will then receive a truancy letter in the mail. On the 6th unexcused absence, a meeting is required with the principal to sign a contract stating your understanding and responsibilities of the legal educational requirements of student attendance.
Please reach out with any questions you may have!
What are you leaning into this week?
Mrs. Harp
Question of the week from Principal Harp
Each week, I will be sending out a question with which you will be given the opportunity to engage in a new conversation with your child. We all know how hard it is to draw out responses other than, "nothing" or "fine" when we ask "What did you do today?" or "How was school?" Be sure to use open ended follow-up questions and statements such as "Tell me more about that!" or "What did you think of that?" Please ask your student(s) the question below, share their response with us and make our day! You can submit more than one response!
(No need to put names or identifying words.)

🏳️ Lost & Found 🏳️
The Lost & Found had been cleared out.
Items with names are on the right side & items found after the 3 day weekend are on the left.
The Lost & Found is currently located outside the multi underneath the overhang. It is cleared out monthly & after each break (3day weekends, Fall, Thanksgiving, Winter, Mid-Winter, Spring, Summer, etc.). Please encourage student(s) to look for their items. There are so many like-new & good condition items that end up hanging on the racks.
Feel free to contact me directly with any questions, suggestions, or to help.

🌱 Garden Update 🌱
Hello Panther Families!
I have all the paver I need thank you so much! Site B is going to look amazing when it's done! Come and check it out its in-between room 10 and the K building. Also it looks like every class has a volunteer, which I super appreciate. We are continuing to study butterflies and get into the groove of being in the outdoor garden classroom. Our composting system is currently under construction and students will be running the composting system, worm compost, aeroponic grow towers, starting seeds, re-planting beds and eating the haul of pears that are just about ready to harvest in the orchard.
As always the garden space is a community space and you are so welcome to come up and spend time here. Let your student show you around! Reach out to me anytime aortiz@petk12.org
With gratitude,
Ms. Ortiz
📘 Library Update 📘
6th Street Playhouse Will Start Season with “Elephant and Piggie” A Playful Exploration of Friendship and Possibility!
Following last season’s success with A Year With Frog and Toad, 6th Street Playhouse begins their 2023-2024 season with another Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production. Professional actors will bring children’s literature to life in Elephant & Piggie’s “We are in a Play!” Gerald and Piggie “pop-up” from the pages of Mo Willems’ best loved early-reader books in this rollicking vaudevillian style musical. Book and lyrics by Mo Willems with music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. Tyler Marques directs and choreographs and Rachel Steiner is music director. It opens August 19 and runs weekends through September 24, first in the intimate Monroe Stage and then at Charles M. Schulz Museum Theater.
Elephant & Piggie’s “We are in a Play!” is the perfect way to introduce young people to the joys of live theatre! Gerald, a cautious elephant, and his enthusiastic, free-spirited “bestus” friend, Piggie, will sing and dance their way into your hearts with lively song and colorful storytelling. On a day when anything can happen, the devoted pair face key childhood challenges like trying new things, learning to share and to forgive. All the while, they make problem-solving fun!
The Fifties feel, rockabilly, doo-wop and jazz-inspired music and dance will have everyone bopping in their seats. This bouncy, playful and interactive musical is best enjoyed by children ages 3 and up, but is fun for audiences of all ages!
“I am overjoyed to be directing ‘Elephant and Piggie’,” said Tyler Marques. “I cannot wait for everyone to enjoy the whimsical world Mo Willems created.”
Thanks to our generous PTA, we're so excited to introduce Penngrove Reading Kits this year.
This is a fun way to bring new books home to read as a family, support a struggling reader, encourage love of reading, or just for FUN! If you're curious which kit would be best for your reader, don't hesitate to reach out to their classroom teacher.
Detailed descriptions of kits and a form to request are in the link. Otherwise, feel free to browse the kits in the office or reach out to Mrs. M with any questions at amiljkovic@petk12.org.
I am open to any feedback or suggestions to make this work for our wonderful Panthers.
Please fill this out if you are interested in being on the School Site Council team this year.
This team will meet 4 times this year, for an hour each time to review our Climate and Culture Pan, Our Safety Plan and our LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan).
The purpose of the group is to evaluate data, give input and feedback and guide the plans to meet the needs of our site.
We'd like to have 6 parent/guardians join the team this year.
There will also be 2 certificated and 2 classified staff on the team.
No previous experience nor knowledge of the plans necessary.
Dates we will meet are:
September 6th at 3pm
November 16th at 3pm
February 14th at 3pm
May 8th at 3pm
If we need more dates, we can add them together.
Meetings will be in the conference room in the main building.
*Note: this will take place of our Safety Team we held in 22/23
