Woodland Elementary Weekly Notes
Message from the Principal
Dear Woodland Families!
Happy New Year! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the holidays and have some relaxing time with family and friends. We are all excited to have your children back to fill our classrooms and bring joy to Woodland. I am positive that 2024 will continue to be great!
This month brings the close of our Fall Semester on January 19th. It is hard to believe that nearly half of our school year has been completed, but exciting to see the growth of your children. This month we have our Winter MAP testing for all students. We use the test data, along with all of our other data, to help our teachers get a “dipstick” on how their students have grown this year. I want to reiterate that this is only one test, and it absolutely does not determine who our children are, or who they will become. Oftentimes, our students and parents have anxiety about these testing cycles. These testing days should be considered like any other day, where kids get a chance to show us the great learning that has occurred. If your child asks about these tests, simply tell them to do their best and the rest will fall right into place. Our kids are much more than a test score, as they are little humans who will someday be leaders and do amazing things. One thing I know for sure is that all of your children are awesome, and they will continue to be awesome for years to come.
We often create new years resolutions and I am sure many of you, like me, thought about those over the past few days and weeks. I have my annual goals of being more healthy, and slowing down to enjoy the small things a bit more. Additionally, I am continually energized to keep my same goal of leading Woodland Elementary School the best I can, so that your children receive a “top notch” education. We are committed to that and I look forward to our school community having another strong year.
I want to thank you again for giving us your amazing children. Schools are much more than places of learning. They embody the energy of our youth, the passion of our teachers, and the excitement and support from our school community. As always, I welcome you to email or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns. All my best to you and your families and I wish you a Happy New Year!
Go Wolves!

End of Quarter - Report Cards
As we approach the end of the second quarter, please be aware that the “Grades” tab in Infinite Campus will close to parents on Friday, January 12th. On Friday, January 26th after 4:00 pm you can access your child’s report card via Infinite Campus. Please note that when reviewing the report card, teacher comments do not show up in the portal when looking at the main Grades screen. They do, however, if you access the Reports screen. From there, you can generate a report card in pdf format that will have all the comments.
Book Swap
Thank you for your help in making our book swaps a big success! The next book swap will take place on January 24th. This is an optional activity. Please keep in mind that we will always take any old books you are looking to donate. Thank you!
Counselor's Corner with Mr. Biolo
Now that we are on the back end of the holiday season and things are starting to calm down a bit (hopefully), I thought I’d share this article on mindfulness. I really believe that a little mindfulness practice goes a long way, so here you go!
Practicing Mindfulness with Your Child
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment. It can help kids manage stress and emotions. Teaching children mindfulness exercises is a great way to build their focus, self-control, and emotional intelligence.
Benefits of Mindfulness for Kids:
- Improves focus and concentration
- Helps manage difficult emotions like anger or anxiety
- Reduces stress
- Builds resilience
- Promotes self-esteem and compassion
- Breathing exercises - Have your child pay attention to their breathing and practice taking slow, deep breaths. Guide them to place one hand on their stomach and one on their chest to feel their breath.
- 5 Senses - Encourage your child to notice something they see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. Have them share their observations. This builds present moment awareness.
- Body scans - Have your child slowly scan their body from head to toe, noticing how each body part feels. Release any tension or tightness.
- Visualization - Your child can imagine their favorite peaceful scene like a beach or forest. Have them describe the details of what they see, hear, smell, etc.
- Mindful movement - Do simple stretches or yoga poses together while focusing on breathing and bodily sensations.
Make mindfulness a regular practice by setting aside 5-10 minutes a day. Be patient - mindfulness takes practice but the lifelong benefits are invaluable.
