CNUSD Cell Phone Policy
To foster a more focused and engaging learning environment, CNUSD will implement a new district-wide cell phone policy starting next school year. While some schools have already begun practicing the policy, it will officially take effect across all campuses at the start of the next academic year.
What You Need to Know
- Emergency Access – Students will still have access to their phones in case of an emergency. Safety remains our top priority.
- Phones Are Not Banned – This policy does not prohibit cell phones but ensures they are used appropriately and do not interfere with learning.
Policy Guidelines
- TK-8th Grade: Phones must be off or silenced and kept away throughout the school day.
- High School: Phones must be off and away from bell to bell but may be used during non-instructional times, such as lunch and passing periods.
We appreciate your partnership in helping create a distraction-free learning environment for our students.
Watch the video below for more details. To review the full policy details, click here.
March: SOAR Values and expectations!
Dear Parents,
Happy March! This month and every month, we will continue to share our focus and reinforcement of SOAR values with the students.
March Focus:
Boystown Skill: Giving Compliments
This month, we will focus on teaching and practicing the skill of giving compliments. Students will learn how to offer sincere and thoughtful compliments to peers and staff. This skill promotes positive interactions, builds self-esteem, and strengthens our community by encouraging kindness and respect.
SOAR Values
As part of our commitment to the SOAR values, we will continue to provide new videos and activities that align with these principles. These resources will help students reinforce key behaviors like showing respect, being responsible, and maintaining a positive attitude in all situations.
Location Focus: Restroom Expectations & Drop-off/Pick-up (After-School)
This month, we will focus on reinforcing restroom expectations and ensuring smooth drop-off and pick-up routines, particularly after-school. Students will be reminded to keep restrooms clean, respect personal space, and follow appropriate bathroom protocols. We will also emphasize the importance of safe and efficient drop-off and pick-up routines to support a calm and orderly environment, especially after school when transitions are key.
SEL Focus: Keeping Calm & Community Circle
SEL resources will always be available to support emotional well-being. This month, we are highlighting strategies for “Keeping Calm” to help students manage their emotions during stressful situations. Additionally, “Community Circle” topics will be used to foster open dialogue and strengthen our school community, encouraging students to share, listen, and support one another.
We encourage you to support these values at home by discussing these expectations with your child and reinforcing the importance of kindness, respect, safety, and following routines.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us create a positive learning environment!
When to keep your child home from school
Parent Climate Survey results:
Thank you to the families that filled out the parent climate survey about a month ago. We had over 100 families respond. Our safety committee looked over the responses and discussed how we can improve in areas of need. We noticed that arrival and dismissal were certainly areas of concerns. School parking lot expectations and procedures are listed below. In order for us to have smooth arrival and dismissals, we ask that our Hero families are cooperative. If a staff member asks you to please move forward, or not exit your vehicle, or anything related to the safety of our students or flow of traffic, please be respectful and help be part of the solution.
Arrival Reminders
We have 950 students here at VanderMolen. Morning arrival will always be congested. Here are some tips to make this process easier.
- The main gate opens at 7:15. Breakfast is free. There is very little traffic at this time. The earlier you arrive, the less traffic you will face.
- If you wish to walk your student to the gate, please plan on arriving early to find parking on the street. Please always use the crosswalk.
- PLEASE PULL all the way forward. This includes our Kindergarten students for arrival. Students should exit the vehicle, PARENTS should not be getting out of the car to get their child out. This creates cars to get backed up A LOT. Once your student exits please move out to the outside lane.
- Students should exit the vehicle on the passenger side of the vehicle along the curb. Safety first please.
- The parking lot is NOT a student drop-off area. Parents may park and walk their student across the crosswalk.
- For dismissal, the front parking lot is for "CAR PICK UP ONLY".
- Be patient and safe. Thank you for your support.
No Outside Food Delivery Service
We want to remind parents that outside food deliveries (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub) are not allowed for students at school. All students have access to free breakfast and lunch through our cafeteria each day.
If you are dropping off a lunch for your student, please make sure to inform them before school begins. This allows your child to pick up their lunch from the office without disrupting class. We’re working to reduce classroom interruptions so that teachers and students can focus on their hard work.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

IMPORTANT!! Birthday Celebrations
We love to celebrate our Heroes in as many ways as possible. But, with our focus on student health and safety, there can be no birthday balloons, flowers, treats, etc. dropped off for your child. Per the district’s healthy food and beverage guidelines we are not to pass out non-compliance food items to students. Please remind your child's teacher about a special occasion via Class Dojo so he or she can make it a point to celebrate your child in their classroom in a way that maximizes both joy and safety. Small non-edible items such as pencils, erasers, etc. are okay, but you should have let your child's teacher know ahead of time. If your child does bring an edible item, parents will be called to pick up the food item. We want to celebrate our students but still allow for the students to have the highest education experience possible. The only way to do this is to limit interruptions to your child's classroom.

Safety Reminder
Hero Families,
CNUSD takes threats of violence against our schools very seriously. We have been fortunate that our elementary students don't often engage in this type of behavior, however it is important we start talking with students now about the consequences of such actions. Please view the video below and talk to your child about the seriousness of making fake threats.
Please review the Parent-Staff-Student Compact with your child.
