FROM THE DESK OF....
Melissa McLean, Pathways Coordinator~
The data outlined in the 2024 State of the Future U.S. Workforce report generated by YouScience, confirms that students of all genders and ethnicities have the necessary aptitudes to be successful. However, many don't pursue these opportunities because of explicit/implicit biases due to:
1) Lack of exposure and insufficient levels of representation
2) Poor planning tools
3) Misguided guidance
(see image below)
Through career exploration and conversation, our students can better understand who they are and how they want to show up in the world of work. It's very difficult to be what you can't see, and the exposure gap is real. Additionally, our students report that representation matters, which is why we were thrilled to have partnered during Black History Month with local industry to provide insight into what is available to students once they graduate from high school. Our focus this month has been on finding fulfilling careers that build-wealth and lasting opportunity.
CAREER CONVERSATIONS- BLACK WOMEN PROFESSIONALS
On February 12, five Black women professionals spent the morning with 32 Tartan female students to share their insights, advice and journey to their careers today. We spent time in a large group, followed by smaller group networking sessions and finished with informal conversations over lunch. Our experts weighed in on these questions and more.

Earlier this month, 30 North and Tartan students attended an exclusive STEM event at the 3M Innovation Center. They heard from a panel of engineers and industry experts about their work in STEM and also learned about the importance of diversity and equity in the workplace.
Thank you to the equity and inclusion team at the 3M Innovation Center for sponsoring this career conversation and lunch.
