KINDERGARTEN & NEW FIRST GRADE REGISTRATION STARTS MARCH 6
Kindergarten Registration begins Monday, March 6, through Friday, March 10, at Lisbon Elementary School. Children who will be five years old as of September 1, 2023, must enroll in Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. Registration is online. Please visit the Howard County Public School System website for complete information about enrollment and registration. In addition, there is information on the HCPSS website, Getting Ready for Kindergarten, which provides an overview of the kindergarten program in Howard County.
Please share this information with neighbors who have children entering kindergarten in the fall.
6 Ways to Help Kids Overcome Math Anxiety
1. Foster a Positive Attitude
Parents’ math anxiety can influence children's attitudes. Many adults still believe math myths—like that someone is a “math person” or not. Kids need to hear that math is for everyone.
2. Make Math Relevant
Use the 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) lesson model at home to engage kids in hands-on learning and real-world tasks.
3. Set High Expectations
Challenging kids helps them develop strong problem-solving skills. When students work through difficult problems, they engage in productive struggle and develop grit.
4. Create a Safe Environment for Learning
Making mistakes is part of learning. Getting the wrong answer doesn’t mean your child can’t solve the problem; it just means they haven’t solved the problem yet. While learning math, children should feel comfortable enough to take risks and share their approaches to problem-solving. They’ll see mistakes as opportunities to learn and feel more comfortable persisting in the struggle.
5. Use Positive Language
Negative language can fuel self-doubt and contribute to burnout. Suggesting positive
alternatives can help students change the way they think about math. Instead of “I’m bad at this,” say “I can improve.” Or instead of “This is too hard for me,” try “Learning takes time.”
6. Write It Out
Research shows that kids who write out or discuss math anxiety tend to do better on tests. Asking your child to write out their thoughts and ideas—expressing both their intellectual and emotional reactions to math content—can help them reflect on their comprehension,
engagement, and feelings about a lesson. Soon, they will see more choices in how they respond to difficulties. When students take control of their anxiety, they can focus more on the math and less on their worries about math. They can begin to see moments of struggle as fruitful learning opportunities, rather than sources of stress.

Learning Together Program - Prekindergarten
The Bushy Park Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) prekindergarten programs are making preparations for classes for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. These classes include children with and without disabilities. The program’s focus is helping all children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills. Parents of children who will be 3 by September 1st may apply, applications will be available and accepted in mid February.
In alignment with Maryland’s Blueprint for the Future, new applications for students turning 4 by September 1 will not be available or accepted. The Howard County Public School System continues to offer a prekindergarten program for income eligible children who will be four years old by September 1. For additional information contact the school or visit: https://www.hcpss.org/schools/pre-k-programs/
HCPSS is committed to providing instruction based on the statewide Early Learning Standards which are in alignment with Kindergarten Readiness. The fees listed in the application will be collected monthly regardless of the learning model determined by HCPSS throughout the upcoming school year (virtual, hybrid, in person, or class quarantine). If you have any additional questions , please contact Roseann Kleinschmidt at (410) 313-5500 .
Donations Needed for Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar
Many 4th grade students have signed up to participate in the Reverse Engineering Instructional Seminar. Students will take apart objects to see how they work and discover the technology used inside.
As the holiday season approaches, many of you may begin purging closets and cleaning out toy rooms. If you have any items that you wouldn’t mind donating for our reverse engineering students, please send them in with your child. There is a collection box in the main hallway and another one outside of Mrs. O'Connor's classroom. This collection will continue through February.
Items do not need to be in working order, but they should be safe to disassemble, have a way to be taken apart (flat-head or Phillips-head screws), and no larger than approximately a shoe box. Some suggested items are below:

-Alarm Clock/Radio
-Television Remote Control
-See and Say/Etch a Sketch Toys
