All ELA Teachers Need This Book!
The Book Whisperer is written by Donalyn Miller, a 6th grade teacher in Texas. In the book, she takes us into her classroom on a journey of revealed secrets. Mrs. Miller wants teachers to understand and know that ALL students can, not only learn to read, but love to read.
I challenge every school system to get a copy of this book. A lot of our students have lost the love for reading, in fact, some will say how much they hate to read. This is unacceptable and we need to do everything we can as educators to prevent this from happening. This book will give your teachers a fresh look at what all classrooms could be…magical again!

School Climate
Detective Barnes presented at Coastal Plains RESA on Tuesday, October 25th for the Counselors Job Alike meeting. He shared with members in attendance information about gangs and vaping and how this is affecting our youth today. He talked about why kids join gangs, and what counsellors, teachers and school personnel can look for in spotting gangs and gang activity. There are 1,600 recorded gangs in the state of Georgia, with 157 counties reporting that they have gangs in their counties. We used to think that gangs were only in large cities, but now it is evident that they are here in South Georgia.
Gangs draw young people away from homes and schools into a life of violence. Gangs bring fear and violence to neighborhoods, destroy property and eventually drive out businesses in the area. Gangs are all about dominance, money, and power.
Gang Indicators:
As school personnel, we should look for the 4 R’s of Graffiti:
Read it: What gang is involved, can intelligence be gathered, monikers of gang members, any threats to other gangs
Report it: A law enforcement report needs to be generated.
Record it: Should be photographed for future use.
Remove it: Should be removed as soon as possible after it has been reported to law enforcement.
Vaping is another problem that school officials, teachers, and staff are experiencing with children. Detective Barnes stressed that prevention is so important. Start talking to children in middle school about the risks of vaping. Education is key, as well as limiting access. Children need to know the long-term risks associated with vaping.
This was a very informative session and we are grateful for the opportunity to have him speak to our group at RESA. We are fortunate to have detectives such as Detective Barnes to be willing to share with us ways to encourage our students and keep them healthy and safe.

Cultivating Hope Through Partnerships
By understanding the deep needs of students and families—and joining forces with groups capable of meeting those needs—schools can see barriers diminish.
Your highest priority is straightforward: connect students and families with services. When determining your goals and specific "targets," your wraparound team needs to balance what's easily achievable against a stretch goal requiring more commitment and focus. Science Updates and Resources
Coastal Plains RESA has partnered with Keith Crandall, the Science Program Manager at Georgia Department of Education to bring our science teachers more support, resources and updates in science. We now have a Science BRIDGE Partnership with each district in our area and we are excited at what this will do for our students! If you have an awesome science resource that you would like to share with us, our science partners will be sure to communicate that with all of their science teachers. Just send your information to jennianderson@cpresa.org.
If you haven’t seen the most recent science updates from GaDOE, check it out now.
If you are not part of the GaDOE Community, then join to get the latest information on the topics related to your interests. It’s like a facebook for educators.
Full Academic Year Requirements for EOG Students
Determining if a student is a Full Academic Year (FAY) student or not is very important with test scores and other derived accountability metrics like SGPs and Lexiles.
A middle or elementary student taking EOGs must be enrolled at least 65% of the school year to be considered Full Academic Year. Remember that the state counts calendar days -- not school days. The count starts with the first student day of school and runs to the close of the state testing window which will be May 19, 2023 this school year. A simple way to calculate the deadline to be enrolled is detailed below.
Step 1: Determine the number of calendar days from your first day of school in the fall of 2022 to May 19, 2023. (Close of the State Testing Window.)
- Use the online calculator link below.
- Always check the Box “Include End Date Calculation.”
Step 2: Multiply that number of days by .35 to determine how many days FAY students can miss at the start of the school year before they become Non-FAY. (Always round down to the nearest whole number.)
Step 3: Through trial and error, determine the date in November that students must be enrolled by to be FAY. A good date to start on is November 15th . Always re-click the green button “Calculate the Duration” with every date change. Time and Date Link
A different calculation is required for students taking EOCs at the high school or middle school levels. Attend the MS/HS Job Alike on November 10th or January 11th to learn about this calculation.
