From the Superintendent's Desk
Currently, administration is focusing on the health adaptions (included in the ISBE guidance) that are necessary to put in place for a safe return of all students and staff. At the same time, we are exploring remote learning options for students who require an accommodation. Your feedback is critical to our planning process. Please take a moment to respond to questions through our online survey. We are asking for your response by Friday, July 3, 5:00 p.m. We anticipate sharing our re-entry plan with parents at the end of July. Thank you in advance for sharing your feedback with us.
From the Principal's Desk
Drop-Off/Pick-Up
I want to thank everyone who has signed up for a drop-off and pick-up day and time. We have had 96% of our families sign up! The process for families has been running very smoothly since the beginning and that is thanks to the amazing team that is working these days and the families that have come through! We will be continuing through the summer with drop-off and pick-up until we have returned all of the student items to families and collected all of the school materials that the students took home with them in March.
Registration
Registration will begin on July 6th. Families will be emailed information that they need to register and a link will be available on the district website.
OGS July Summer Camps
Hopefully you’ve gotten to enjoy the beginning of your summer break. If you are ready to try something new, OG summer camps are in full swing and there are still several options for students to participate in. Throughout the month of June, our teachers and students have been doing all sorts of creative activities and they are ready for round two in July. Registration is open now, reserve your seat soon so we can keep the fun going!

ECRA Data Results
Thank you to everyone who participated in the ECRA end of year survey in May. We have received the data back and it is now posted on our OG website within the Parent/Guardian Resources Page. As you review your survey results, take a look at the mean score for each question. Mean scores greater than 3 are considered favorable ratings and mean scores less than 3 are areas of focus for improvement. We are excited to share that all of our mean scores are above a 3! While we appreciate the overall positive results, we also know that if there is a need for a remote situation in the future, there is room for us to improve our practices. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Summertime Short
Good morning! We hope this message finds you doing well. We know that there are still many unknowns as we approach a new school year and there are many important conversations that are taking place within our community, state, nation, and the world regarding race. Most importantly we wanted to continue to acknowledge our commitment in our beliefs that:
All children come first
School and community collaborate to enhance learning
Diversity in our community elevates learning
Differentiated instruction maximizes potential
We are diligently working to maintain and expand these beliefs while providing a safe, welcoming, and engaged learning environment as we plan for re-entry for the 2020/2021 school year. Thank you for your support and input throughout this process.
Finally, the theme for this week's “Summertime Short” is diversity.

SEL Summertime Short
People come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, values, opinions, and perspectives. Simply put, this is the diversity that each student, parent, guardian, and community member brings to our Oak Grove Family. Our school community models and teaches the golden rule; treat others the way that you want to be treated. Furthermore, we reject bullying, harassment, and intolerance of any kind and have a responsibility to model and teach kindness and empathy to all of our family members and beyond.
What are the best practices for supporting our students in regards to diversity?
Bring students’ experiences into the classroom
Do not push or put students on the spot but provide them with opportunities to share experiences that they have had.
Talk about diversity explicitly
Research shows that students are aware of diversity as early as 1st grade. Therefore, talk about differences, engage students in conversations, and help them to reflect on their learning.
Learn with our students
Reflect on the lesson, revise the curriculum, and identify potential implicit biases.
What is Oak Grove currently doing to ensure that our family members are provided a diversified experience?
- Utilize inquiry-based teaching methods to foster the student’s voice
- Incorporate diversified texts
- Create and support the multicultural committee
What can we do to continue to improve our community’s capacity for diversity?
- Listen to all students, staff, and community members
- Continue to integrate curriculum that provides diverse perspectives
- Collaborate with the PTO, OGEA, and community to identify opportunities for growth
