March Newsletter
March is Women's History Month!
Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor and commemorate women’s contributions in American history.
Throughout the month of March, we are recognizing women who have made history in Kansas City. Kansas City has been home to many extraordinary women. Pioneers. Activists. Entrepreneurs. Artists. Some were born here, others came and never left, but all helped shape our city into what it is today. Click here to view the extraordinary women from Kansas City we’ve highlighted to date.
Welcome Back to School - Yellow Status
On Monday, March 15, HMC-1 transitioned to the Yellow Health Status after months of planning and fine-tuning of health and safety measures. We want to thank HMC-1 students, staff and parents for their tireless work, commitment and support to making this unprecedented school year a success. It has been a challenging year to date but HMC-1 scholars have persevered.
The safety and health of all students and staff remains a top priority. It is a strongly-held belief throughout the district and community that with thoughtful planning and well-implemented proactive measures, HMC-1 can provide a welcoming environment for students to continue to learn and grow.
Thanks to our partners at Truman Medical Centers/University Health (TMC/UH), hundreds of HMC-1 staff received the first dose of the vaccine today, with the second dose scheduled to be administered on Thursday, April 8.

KC Star Scholar Athlete
Congratulations to Ruskin Seniors Jayda S., Javon H., and James N. who have been nominated for consideration as the 2021 Kansas City Star Scholar Athlete.
The annual Kansas City Star Scholar-Athlete awards program, now in its 38th year of recognizing the best of the best in Kansas City-area young people, is always special. Student-athletes are evaluated 45% on their athletic prowess, 35% on academic achievements, 10% on participation in activities apart from sports and academics, such as community service and student government, and 10% on overall impact on their respective school’s environment.
The overall male and female winners earn trophies and typically are invited to throw out the first pitch before a Royals game at Kauffman Stadium. Good luck to our Ruskin seniors! We thank you for representing Ruskin and HMC-1 in such a great way.

Three HMC-1 Elementary Schools Earn Lego League Awards!
Congratulations to three HMC-1 elementary schools for earning Lego League awards! On Saturday, March 13, HMC-1 students participated in a Live Q&A session with Lego League judges as the final event. Three of the seven HMC-1 elementary schools earned awards for their projects.
First Lego League is a city wide challenge for students ages 9-16. Students were presented with the challenge question: Explore opportunities to play and be active! How do we use our creativity to be more active? How can we motivate our community to be more active? They worked in small teams at each elementary school with the support of a First Lego League coach to research the challenge question, identify possible solutions, create a presentation to share their findings, and pitch their final product. Congratulations for all of your hardwork!
