F Fairview Falcon Family Newsletter
February 2023

From the Principal
Greetings, families!
As always, thank you for taking the time to read our monthly newsletter. We try to be very deliberate regarding the communication that we send out to you as we know that everyone is extremely busy and that email inboxes tend to swell in size during this time of the year. Please know how much we appreciate you!
At the end of February, we will re-invite all of you to participate in our second round of Parent-Teacher conferences. Our students are learning and growing so much; being able to sit down with you to discuss your child is very important to us. See the first section below for more details and to give us your availability.
Apart from that, we have a great deal going on around Fairview this month (PTA Trivia Night, Candy Grams, Valentine's Parties, Fancy Lunch Day, Kindness Week, and more!). Please read below for all of the latest.
Thank you,
Dr. Simmons, Principal

Specialist Updates
Hello Fairview Families đ
Another note from the gym! Classes have been working to get back into routines after the holiday break. We played one of the kidâs favorite games called âBattleshipâ. Recently, weâve been working on striking skills in stations and game situations. Now weâre getting ready for basketball skills. Be sure to ask your students about the skills being learned and the games being played. Please continue to email or send in photos of your kiddos in action! Iâve received a few and put them up on the bulletin board. Finally, PLEASE help your kiddos remember their tennis shoes. There have been some situations where kids must sit out of some activities because of unsafe footwear. Might as well wear them every day, I do!!
As always, thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wright
From the Art Room:
In art class students have finished up our Still Life Unit and have begun our Design Unit. Ask your child what they are working on! Please plan on dropping by Fairviewâs Multicultural Night and Art Show on March 16th from 5:30-7, your child has picked out 1-2 of their favorite works to have on display!
Thanks for keeping your kids creating!

From the Media Center
Media Center News! Students started the month thinking about reading goals. Books about winter, snow, blizzards, penguins, polar bears and more have been displayed for student to choose. Some students have been learning about âBooks Every 4th/5th Grader Should Knowâ and have the opportunity to check them out. They are creating a list of books they believe should be included on such a list! Upper grades will be reviewing lessons and learning more about library organization and book finding. 3rd grade has explored the Who Was/Is series. 2nd grade has looked at books by Patricia Polacco, historical fiction, and picture book biographies. 1st grade enjoyed books by Jan Brett, funny books with objects as characters and books with friendship themes. Kindergarteners have enjoyed books with more favorite book characters and by favorite authors.
Our second and last book fair will be February 27-March 2!

Counselor news:
February is an exciting month for School Counseling!
February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week! Did you know that School Counseling is over 100 years old? Did you know that there are over 120,000 School Counselors in the US serving over 50 million K-12 students? Mrs. Doenges and I are so happy to be part of that number and to serve our Fairview students! For more information about School Counseling, check out the American School Counselor Association website: https://www.schoolcounselor.org/
Here is what students will be learning about in their counselor classes in February:
Kindergarten: Problem solving/conflict resolution
1st grade: Growth mindset
2nd grade: Positive self-concept and Growth mindset
3rd grade: Coping strategies and Feedback
4th grade: Growth mindset and Goal setting
5th grade: Kindness/Compliments and Diversity/Inclusion
As always, if there are ways our counseling team can support your student or family, please let us know!

Technology Specials
In Technology we are continuing to learn about digital citizenship and how to keep safe when we are using the internet. We have also been learning more about apps such as Draw and Tell and Sketchers School, then using what we have drawn in those apps to make some great collages in Pic Collage. 4th and 5th grade have been introduced to a graphic design app call Canva where they can take their creativity to another level.
Enjoy the rest of your winter!
Annette Kemble
From the Music Room
In music weâve been singing, dancing, and playing instruments. 4th and 5th graders just began their recorder unit and are finally starting to play without the ear piercing squeaks that come with learning a new instrument. đ All other grade levels have been playing xylophones as well as many unpitched instruments such as drums and tambourines. Ms. Prewett, our Mizzou student teacher has met all classes, and is settling in quite nicely. February will bring about Valentines songs and possibly some ukulele playing!
