Reminder for 8th Grade Students and Parents!

Please let me know if your child is applying to ECHS. I will be gathering the required recommendations and reports to submit to Early College for students who have applied.

The deadline for application packets to be completed is March 25th!

MR. SMITH - BAND/MUSIC APPRECIATION

Students should remember to check their email throughout the day, each day and check for announcements in Google Classroom. I post the elective schedule to Google Classroom every Sunday afternoon as well as any other information then will need to know for the week ahead. Students have also been encouraged to keep track of grades and assignments. We have about three weeks remaining in this quarter. I don't want anyone to get so far behind that they feel overwhelmed or as if they are in a hopeless situation. Communicate with teachers. HELP US HELP YOU!

Band 6: 6th grade band students are still working hard on developing characteristic sounds on their instruments. We have been working through warm-up exercises and building the physical skills necessary to perform at the highest level. Students have been assigned their first piece of "concert" music. These playing assignments will allow us all to track their progress and set up a potential virtual band concert. Over the next few weeks, we will be adding more music. Please encourage your child to practice daily and give positive feedback when you hear they are really working hard.

Band 7: 7th grade band students should have completed all of the parts of Celtic Air and Dance No. 2 as of last week. I still have quite a few students who are missing all three parts of this assignment. A second piece has already been assigned with the first part being due on Wednesday March 3. Students have the entire 90 minute class period to work on all of the music that has been or will be assigned and receive immediate feedback. Outside of class, I am asking for just a few minutes of meaningful practice time each day. This does not necessarily mean they have to play their instrument. They can work on notes, fingerings, and/or rhythms all while humming along with their part. All recordings must be submitted via Smartmusic.

Music Appreciation 6: We have officially finished our unit on the musical alphabet following a few weather related setbacks. Last week, I introduced our new unit, rhythm. The students have begun learning to analyze eight, quarter, half, and whole note rhythms. This week, we will be learning how these rhythms sound by incorporating bucket drumming into our lesson. Over the next few weeks, students will learn how to transcribe rhythms in various time signatures, meaning they will be writing out the rhythms as they hear them.

Music Appreciation 7: We have completed our study of the music of the Classical Era. The students will take a quiz on this topic on Thursday. Following the quiz, we will start on the music of the Romantic Era. We will talk about events that occured during this time (1820-1900), composers and their works, major musical accomplishments, and key points about the classical era overall.

Music Appreciation 8: We have completed our study of the music and culture of Africa. This week, we continue on our world music tour with a stop in the Middle East. Students will learn about the history and origins of Middle Eastern music, the various instruments used, and how today's music and culture in the Middle East.

Details are being shared this week about this optional independent reading opportunity. Our goal is not only to get kids reading, but also provide a community for readers where we can share conversations over exciting characters and interesting plots. Prizes will be raffled off after each round. More information can be found at this link.

MS. NEUJAHR - SCIENCE

This week we are wrapping up the Excretory System and Urinary System and moving onward to the nervous System and Reproductive Systems.For the past 6 weeks, students have been learning different functions and organs of the Human Body Systems and should be diligently working on their third nine weeks project. This project is due exactly a month from March 1st. Please be always checking your students' progress and grades regarding what they have and if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know! Thanks!

MR. COBB - MATH

This week we are continuing to practice practice practice solving equations and inequalities. Please remind students that they need to be completing their daily assignments and emailing me if they are turning in an assignment that is late. They only need to email me if the assignment has been graded and they currently have a 0 or a grade they would like to improve. As always, please reach out to me directly if you have questions or concerns.

MR. LEMONS - SOCIAL STUDIES

This week we are moving into WW2. We will be talking about WW2 dictators and how they became powerful and we will be talking about what they did to the people in their countries. Students need to remember that their 5 page paper is due this friday, March 5th. It is very important that they finish it on time so that I can go through their papers this weekend and give them feedback before their final drafts are due the following Friday. If students do not know that the paper is on, they should email me so that they can at least start the paper.

MS. BAECHLE - ELA:

For the weeks of 3/1-3/12 students will continue to read excerpts (parts of the text) from their third text of the year, ¨The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass.¨ Our lessons will be centered around reviewing specific standards from NC check-in two which require additional growth. Additional mini-lessons and class activities will occur including: poetry, a social issues project of choice, color-coding text, while analyzing content to deepen understanding, while responding to text-based questions. Students have an opportunity to participate in the “Sweet 16 Reading Challenge,” 🏀 Independent Reading Sweet Sixteen Tournament Bracket - CCMS/FMS - Google Slides , while enhancing their love for reading! In addition students have a fun opportunity to partake in a virtual “FMS Talent Show,” 2020-2021 FMS VIRTUAL TALENT SHOW - Google Forms. Please check out these two links for additional information. I will be allowing participation in either or both of these extracurriculars for individual extra credit in ELA.

Parents/guardians, please make sure to have your students check Power school regularly to see what work they are missing. It is critical that ALL students take accountability for their work, come to class regularly, and turn in work on a consistent basis. I will take any late work for full credit. In addition, students should be working on their Q3 project, which is due on Friday, March 19th. In addition, I hold office hours weekly on Wednesdays from 9:00-9:30 (C1-C2) and 9:30-10:00 (C3-C4). I have begun working with small groups of students on specific skill sets during the times mentioned above. If your student receives an email, they should do their best to attend for additional support. The code for Google meets is: fmsoffice7.

The expectation is that students are working on theri I-Ready Pathways for at least 40 minutes weekly for both ELA and Math. NASA launched a rover on Mars on February 18th called the Perseverance. I added some fun links in Google Classroom for the students to interact with. I told the students if they use the photo booth link to email me a copy of the picture, I will share them with Ms. Boardman. I added one of mine so you can see what they are like.

In other news we started a new unit on Friday the 26th. We are now working on Energy. We will be focusing on these four types of energy: mechanical (kicking a soccer ball), thermal (heat), electromagnetic(solar power), and electrical (electricity). The main focus for our unit will be the transfer of thermal energy.

I updated the students' science grades in PowerSchool on Thursday. Please make sure to ask your student to show you their grade on PowerSchool so you can help them check for any missing work.

The next two weeks in social studies, we are wrapping up our unit for ancient Greece. We will focus on the rule of Pericles, the Peloponnesian War, Greek gods and goddesses, and the famous scholars and philosophers of ancient Greece.
