November 18, 2022
Early Dismissal - Monday, November 21st and Tuesday, November 22nd
No School on Wednesday, November 23rd through Friday, November 25th
Thanksgiving is a time of reflection and kindness. It is a time when we spend giving thanks for all the blessings in our lives; looking to assist others in need. This Thanksgiving I encourage everyone to consider the meaning of kindness. To be kind to one another. Every day I am thankful that I am part of a school community where our students, staff, and families demonstrate various acts of kindness through their words and actions to each other. Being kind matters not just at Thanksgiving, but all throughout the year. I want to express my sincere thanks to our families who support the work we do each day and partner with us to be the very best we can be for students. I wish all of our families a beautiful Thanksgiving holiday.
Sincerely,
Beth
Parent Information
This week, we have received many inquiries regarding head lice, and it seems that there is a lot of misinformation circulating about this topic. Approximately ten years ago, new research was conducted revealing that school transmission of head lice is extremely rare. This is because head lice are spread by direct head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact. As a result, traditional practices, such as large-group screenings for head lice and excluding children with head lice, are not effective and not recommended. Additionally, notifications to school communities regarding head lice are a breach of confidentiality and do not change the low level of transmission already present in schools. All major governing bodies, including the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of School Nurses agree with these guidelines. We encourage families to learn more about head lice via the following links:

STEAM Special Update
The STEAM Lab has been busy and students are excited to come to the lab to learn and collaborate with their classmates! All students from first to sixth grade engaged in a STEAM Special orientation unit as they learned just what STEAM is and what they will do and learn in the STEAM Lab. Now the classes are moving on to new projects.
The classes will rotate through a variety of projects during the rest of the year. All students will explore digital fabrication with programs such as FabMaker Studio. Our first and second graders will learn about chemical engineering as they investigate what makes a good modeling dough. Third graders will learn about civil engineering as they explore bridge designs and build some of their own. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders will be learning about aerospace engineering as they work together to design parachutes.
All classes will also build their computer programming skills through different activities, projects, and lessons. We hope families can join the fun during Computer Science Education Week, which takes place the week of December 5-11. Check out Hour of Code for Parents for information about how you can support your children in learning coding and other computer science concepts.
Congratulations FIM Champions
During the first marking period, there were nine students at Goodnoe Elementary who earned the title of First in Math Grand Champion. In order to be a grand champion, a student must earn 10,000 or more stickers. Great job to the following students for working hard in First in Math.
Grade-3: Albert Zelenin and Leilani Bochnowicz
Grade-4: AJ Chan, Siddhant Kamath, Siddharth Allampally, Violet Garonski, and Patrick McCafferty
Grade-5: Naisha Kohad and Lucas Garstka
Notes from the Music Room
We have had a very musical couple of weeks here at GES! The 5th grade members of our Goodnoe Singers (GOODS) made their performance debut when they sang for the Veterans and our 6th Grade GOODS members made their debut at Chancellor Center singing for the administrative team. If you would like to hear our talented Goodnoe Singers perform, mark your calendar for the Winter Concert on December 14th, 7pm at Newtown Middle School. Our entire school has been filling the hallways with our favorite THANK-YOU songs in honor of the holiday. Here is a link to share some of our songs and activities with the entire family: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1jkAXBJuEWfgUyzUSk0fu60Jmva4ZjEGhRrE8uYv6-nA/edit?usp=sharing

GES THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, our Goodnoe Community would like to take the time to help others in need. In order to do so, we are holding a Food Drive to benefit the Food Pantry of Lower Bucks County.
We are setting a goal of collecting at least 1000 pounds of food for the pantry. We will not know the total until after the food is collected and sent to the pantry but we are encouraging grade levels to set specific goals to encourage participation (for example, in sixth grade the goal is to collect 100 items per homeroom).
Tables will be set up in the main hallway for collection and we will be trying to generate some “friendly competition” by awarding an extra recess to the GRADE LEVEL that collects the most items.
Thank you for your donations!

Reading Tidbits & Tips
National Picture Book Month- Picture books are amazing for children of all ages to read. A college education professor once shared he himself would read a picture book every night before bed. These books can speak to all different feelings and concepts through illustration and text and are artfully crafted by amazing children’s authors and illustrators. There is nothing like physically turning the pages of a beautifully crafted picture book! This month we encourage you to share some of your childhood favorites with your own children. It will bring a smile to all of your faces. Happy reading!
Over the last few weeks, students have been learning about kindness and empathy in guidance lessons. Empathy is important because it can help people build connection, regulate emotion, and promote helping behaviors. For kids, empathy can prevent bullying, help them make friends, and help them receive help from others. Empathy begins with the capacity to take another’s perspective, to walk in another’s shoes.
Here are some things you can do at home to help foster empathy:
Empathize with your child and model empathy for others.
Provide opportunities for your children to practice empathy by helping them see the perspective of others.
Help your child expand his or her circle of concern beyond family and close friends. Use stories from the news to start conversations with children about other people’s hardships and challenges, or the different experiences of children from another country or community.
Improving a child’s ability to have empathy for others can help improve his or her ability to be kind to everyone.

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
During the past few weeks, your child’s class has been reviewing the SW-PBIS (School Wide- Positive Behavior Interventions & Support) school expectations. The lessons included a class discussion, modeling and practicing of respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the locations listed on the school-wide matrix. Your child’s class also learned about the voice levels that are expected for the different locations. Please take some time to review the matrix and voice level chart with your child. Our school website has a SW-PBIS link with more specific information regarding the structure of Goodnoe’s School Wide Positive Interventions & Support system.
